SHOCKING fashion & lifestyle photography!

We are absolutely feeling our very own Dana Jonas’ Shocking Goat lifestyle photography shoot. The colors are like WOW and the locations are too much fun. With a set full of beautiful models, talented stylists, funky fresh fashion designs, and an absolutely SHOCKING product, we couldn’t ask for a better team to collaborate with. These watches have been on trend, seen on celebrities and has become a Seattle favorite. The timepieces are all so colorful, which of course matches spunky Dana Jonas’ style well. She was nothing short of stoked to have the opportunity to highlight such a fun product, she definitely brought the lifestyle of the brand to life. Read below to find out Dana’s insight on this refreshing shoot:

This fashion and lifestyle photography shoot was a blast! From the one of a kind designer fashion by Alexander Aesthetic, to the great talent from Seattle Model’s Guild and the amazing product which brought us all together, it was definitely a shoot to remember. Dhruva, the CEO of shocking goat, is a hoot and none of this would have been possible without his genius mind when it came to how he wanted his product represented. One of the best collaborations I’ve been a part of to date 🙂 Also, I should give a shout-out to the amazing stylist and producer, Kayleigh Capelle! It has been one of my favorite shoots to date. Lots of laughs and fun times! You should definitely check out the video, to see what my energy is like on set. And, oh, don’t judge me for my potty mouth at the end of the video, haha!

Fashion Photography with Matt Jebbia

It’s Fashion Friday, which means Matt Jebbia is getting behind the camera to shoot some great fashion photography. This time around he decided to get the whole team involved. Check out this amazing behind the scenes footage, edited by David King.

Our favorite photo shoots here at the studio involve the whole team. We paired it with one of our Martini Thursdays and we had a recipe for success! With feet tapping to some Beyoncé jams our spirits were soaring as Matt Jebbia took the reigns as Photographer and Creative Director. Matt wanted a fun, upbeat shoot to highlight local finds and gorgeous shoes. A word from the photographer on collaboration and shooting with two cinematographers on the same set:

All of the brainstorming sessions and days spent rummaging through vintage clothing stores paid off. With myself behind the camera and two cinematographers filming behind the scenes, it was a bit crazy at times trying to avoid bumping into one another. But once the shoot was in full swing it all seemed to just click. I really enjoyed working with everyone involved. It’s true the best work comes from a collaboration. I absolutely love shooting fashion and all the styling worked together to create a chic, final product that everyone is proud of. Big thanks to model Megan Nuchols, Hair/Makeup artist Celena Rubin, Styling by our own Sarah Ludwig, Cinematographers Andy Maser/David King and thanks to all of the Studio 3 team.

Studio 3 has eyes on Bill Cunningham!

While Portland may not be perceived as a fashion epicenter like NYC or LA, the fashion buzz surrounding the Pacific Northwest is undeniable. Our independent, eco-friendly atmosphere has led to three of the nine winners of Project Runway to call Portland home at one time or another. As our city gains notoriety in the fashion world, we decided to look back at the long career of photographer Bill Cunningham and his decades of work documenting New York fashion trends.

ASMP Seminar: Blake Discher

We are still buzzing here at Studio 3 after hosting last night’s ASMP seminar No More Grumbling – Get Out There! by Detroit photographer and National ASMP board member, Blake Discher. We love having the ASMP in studio, especially when it’s a conversation we so firmly believe in: getting photographers work seen & how to protect yourself once you are hired. All in all it was a great talk and fun party.
The seminar featured topics, such as:

How to “work a room”
Positioning yourself to be successful
The reasons photographers fail
Starting an Accountability Group
Learn the value in aspiring to be second
Overcoming the fear of the sales process
Celebrate Effort not just Victory
Learn what it means to be a professional in sales

Blake presented an inspiring look at the value of overcoming your fear of the sales process and how to succeed as a photographer by celebrating effort over victory. It was refreshing for the audience to hear that a win isn’t the end all be all. It was also an important message of never releasing raw files, nor should you be contracted as work for hire. Your work is your work and the ASMP strongly upholds the value that photographers/image creators hold on to the original copyright. Blake nailed the idea home, by presenting the pros and cons of both.

The ASMP did nothing short but deliver a great presentation. Blake was a success and had great advice that any photographer should consider. Blake Discher is a photographer specializing in people with his studio in Detroit. He has a long list of clients and is continuously growing his client base.

Studio 3 Supports WIC!

We decided it was time to help out one of our favorite government agencies, WIC!
WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is a nationwide program for low-income families that teaches health and nutrition skills through classes and supplemental healthy foods. In 2011, the Oregon WIC Program provided support to 177,827 women, infants, and children.
We did some in-studio product shots and some adorable baby shots too – enjoy!

Behind the Scenes at Sugar Wheel Works!

You know it’s going to be a great shoot when your client greets you at the door with fresh brewed coffee and a big plate of donuts. Jude Kirstein, owner of Sugar Wheel Works, is a staple in the growing cycling scene here. Jude masterfully creates hand-built bicycle wheels in her ultra hip shop located in Northeast Portland. We had tons of fun and can’t wait to show you the final video edit. In the meantime, check out these behind the scenes stills from the shoot!

Studio 3 Takes On Baby Day at NW Harvest!

The Seattle team decided to get our volunteer on by visiting one of our favorite local charities, NW Harvest. Right after breakfast at the delicious Portage Bay Cafe, we dropped into the Cherry Street food bank for baby day. We had a blast passing out diapers, formula, and meeting all the deserving families.
This incredible staff dedicates their days to making sure the Seattle area is fed, turning no one away. The admirable can-do attitude inspired us all. We can’t wait to go back! Check out some hilarious pics of us in action below:

Dana Jonas: The Making of a Mash-Up

Ever wondered exactly how Dana makes her vibrant pop-off-the-page Mash-Ups? We managed to snag her off-set for the inside scoop:

Ah, my gosh, the idea came to me as a child actually. I remember sitting in the waiting room for my doctor (I was probably 12), looking through fashion magazines and I thought to myself, I wonder what would happen if I chopped up these pictures and put my favorite pieces together. Years later, I put a spin on that simple yet whimsical idea and called them Mash-Ups!

My process is quite simple really. I find an interesting subject, stick them in front of the camera and get them to do all sorts of crazy movements and dances. At times I focus on the arms or legs, at other times the face. Often I have a general idea of the composition I’m want. I relay that to the model, and let them run with it. Many of my chosen models are also performers or have some background in theater. At the end, I sit with my selects and let instinct and creativity take over. It’s truly a freeing process.

Drink Photography: Pisco Sour

In the great DIY spirit of Portland, we decided to take a stab at creating our own version of the Pisco Sour after salivating over Craig Wagner’s amazing drink photography, shot at local watering hole Circa 33. Pisco is an unaged brandy, that has a very unique flavor to it. The Pisco Sour happens to be a great drink to try out this unique spirit on. No one does it quite like Circa 33, but we thought we would give it a shot. With cocktail shaker and martini glasses in hand, we took a stab at the delicious cocktail. Since we already had the opportunity to shoot the drink at Circa 33, we decided to film our personal creation. As you can see, it was quite the happy hour where Pisco Sours were enjoyed by all!

Thanks to Producer Rachel Meyer for stepping up to the plate as our in house Mixologist and Videographer/Digital Artist David King for the documentation of our taste test. It was great getting a chance to taste the creation that Craig’s drink photography was inspired after. We have been begging him to go shoot more cocktails, to inspire perhaps a weekly happy hour! Maybe we’ll even get a chance to try it with food. If you make this delicious drink at home, we recommend you try the Pisco Sour with a South American inspired meal. 🙂
Here’s the recipe, so you can make your own Pisco Sour at home:

Ingredients:

1 1/2 Ounce Pisco
3/4 ounce lemon juice
1 Ounce Simple Syrup
1 Egg White
3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Preparation:

Pour the pisco, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg into a cocktail shaker, then fill with ice.
Shake Vigorously and Well.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Add Angostura bitters to taste.
Enjoy!
