Product Photographer Matt Jebbia Pump It Up!

Scrumptious Voodoo Doughnuts and a pair of Jimmy Choo Eros Pumps, is there any better combination for a photo shoot?  We decided to pair these two products to create a story of Sweet Misery.  Who hasn’t arrived home in the early morning hours after a late night of dancing and bar hopping.  Those early morning hangovers sure are better with a cup of Joe and some doughnuts fresh from the Voodoo shop.  Read on to get some insight on this creative shoot by Product Photographer Matt Jebbia.

My inspiration for this shoot was hashed out over a studio brainstorming session.  The concept was a little off beat. Expensive shoes and doughnuts aren’t what most photographers think of as a match made in heaven. But I think most of us can agree that we’ve managed to spend way to much of our hard earned money on a pair of shoes at some point in our lives.  And I wanted to play off this odd pairing and totally exaggerate the idea. This was really the beginning of the creative idea for the shoot.  Adding Portland’s famous Voodoo doughnuts just seemed like a fun idea and completed the conceptual story “Sweet Misery”.  We began by setting out the assortment of donuts, and built the rest of the set around the Voodoo.  I knew that I wanted some nice warm sun light streaming through a window so I setup my first light behind the shoes, added a color warming gel and placed a 4×8 sheet of white foam-core in front to fill some of the harsher shadows.  All that was left was some light on the background and a couple of spotty grids to bring out the doughnuts and sparkles in the Jimmy Choo pumps.  The hardest part of this shoot was keeping all of my co-workers away from these delicious treats. – Matt Jebbia

Get Your High Beams On!

With the sudden increase in temperature we thought it was time to showcase Chris Eltrich’s HOT take on our favorite summer accessory: Sunglasses! With all the fun styles and frames, it was hard for Chris to decide what he wanted to feature. After much thinking he decided it was the wayfarer that needed to be in the spotlight. Read on to see why Chris specifically chose these classic glasses:

I really like shoes, clothes and accessories. For this specific shoot, I knew I wanted to focus on sunglasses. Sunglasses are a tried and true accessory that almost everybody has and loves. I decided to capture the classic wayfarer style and was completely in love with these fun colors. Since I was drawn to the color of the frames I wanted to make sure that part of them stood out. I accented the color through the lighting and positioning.

These fun pops of color add the summer twist we can’t resist!

Fashion Photography with Matt Jebbia

It’s Fashion Friday, which means Matt Jebbia is getting behind the camera to shoot some great fashion photography. This time around he decided to get the whole team involved. Check out this amazing behind the scenes footage, edited by David King.

Our favorite photo shoots here at the studio involve the whole team. We paired it with one of our Martini Thursdays and we had a recipe for success! With feet tapping to some Beyoncé jams our spirits were soaring as Matt Jebbia took the reigns as Photographer and Creative Director. Matt wanted a fun, upbeat shoot to highlight local finds and gorgeous shoes. A word from the photographer on collaboration and shooting with two cinematographers on the same set:

All of the brainstorming sessions and days spent rummaging through vintage clothing stores paid off. With myself behind the camera and two cinematographers filming behind the scenes, it was a bit crazy at times trying to avoid bumping into one another. But once the shoot was in full swing it all seemed to just click. I really enjoyed working with everyone involved. It’s true the best work comes from a collaboration. I absolutely love shooting fashion and all the styling worked together to create a chic, final product that everyone is proud of. Big thanks to model Megan Nuchols, Hair/Makeup artist Celena Rubin, Styling by our own Sarah Ludwig, Cinematographers Andy Maser/David King and thanks to all of the Studio 3 team.

Here are a few snapshots taken while on set.

Studio 3 has eyes on Bill Cunningham!

While Portland may not be perceived as a fashion epicenter like NYC or LA, the fashion buzz surrounding the Pacific Northwest is undeniable. Our independent, eco-friendly atmosphere has led to three of the nine winners of Project Runway to call Portland home at one time or another. As our city gains notoriety in the fashion world, we decided to look back at the long career of photographer Bill Cunningham and his decades of work documenting New York fashion trends.
Feast your eyes on these candid images from Cunningham’s column “On The Street” and be sure to watch the Times produced documentary “Bill Cunningham New York”, click here to see the trailer!

30's fashion photography with Designer Peter Czar

Dana Jonas was getting her fashion photography on! Her good friend Peter Czar designed the epic clothes featured in the photographs. We were also lucky enough to shoot in a beyond gorgeous home, we are talking museum quality, the house was unreal. When we say unreal, it not only was gorgeous, it was full of beautiful props, furniture, knick-knacks and artifacts galore. Couldn’t have set the stage better for this 30’s fashion photography shoot. As most fashion photography shoots, this one was inspired by the clothes. We couldn’t have asked for anything more shimmering, delicate, & feminine! Thanks Peter Czar. As for Dana, she has a few words of her own:

Oh man, I felt like a bull in a China factory! Although, thank god, I wasn’t. I remember there were little tea-cups sitting out, and I thought to myself “those are probably worth more than my car”. Haha. On the serious side of the things, the shoot was fantastic. For the first picture, I was bleeding a light head to get the power down on the lights, and turned the head around the face the wall behind me. The wood in this house was a beautiful dark, almost red color. The light gave the shadows in the picture a beautiful amber tone, and created the reflection on the antique throttle. The model was gorgeous and I couldn’t ask for her to wear the gorgeous clothing creations any better. The lighting, the fabric, everything came together so perfectly. There are those incredible moments, when everything just comes together so perfectly. Those are the shots I truly live for and what makes fashion photography more then just a picture, but more like a toast to the clothing itself.

Claudine Ebel: Styling Made Fun!

Every project we work on is a collaborative effort, with a team of people behind it that make it all come together. Working like this is a great experience because it allows for every person to focus on their piece of the project while getting to help and learn from others, and most of all meets cool, new people in the process! Speaking of cool people, it’s our pleasure to feature our friend and stylist-extraordinaire, Claudine Ebel on the blog today!

Claudine might have one of the best attitudes of anyone we’ve ever worked with.  ‘I love this! I love this!’ You can always tell when Claudine Ebel has entered the studio!  Full of creativity and fun-loving energy, she has had a great fashion sense from the get-go. She recalls that at age 5 her mom’s friends would ask who was dressing her! Little did they suspect that the cute kid whose style impressed them would grow up to be a stylist highly demanded in the industry. As Claudine would put it: ‘I was born to style.’

Having her natural talents guiding her the whole way, she’s ecstatic to be prospering in her career, saying that she’s “living the dream and it only gets better.” We at Studio 3 are lucky enough to be able to join her in saying that we’re living a dream, getting to work on cool projects for awesome clients and constantly meeting great new people. And of course, we’re always happy to help support another’s dream. Claudine Ebel’s presence is truly bright and always positive, making every shoot we work with her on a great working environment.

Take a look at Claudine’s talent from the shoot below, and be sure to check out her work in action, in her production, Flight Serena here! Keep up the great work, Claudine!

Portrait Photography of the Seattle Mist!

DList has commissioned Dana Jonas and Studio 3 to do editorial, fashion, and portrait photography. It is always great fun working with the lifestyle brand that represents a lavish, VIP lifestyle that includes dress, dine, drink, & dance. DList has some of the premiere events in the Northwest, including parties at local nightclubs, cover model searches, award shows, and an exclusive gold membership. It tends to be a great read full of must sees and highlights of favorite spots around Seattle.

In our recent shoot with the magazine we had the pleasure of shooting for the Seattle Mist, Seattle’s very own lingerie football league. These girls are serious athletes, practicing often and having more wins than losses. The LFL has gained popularity throughout Seattle as well of the rest of the country, with a huge tournament in Las Vegas, drawing hundreds of fans who root on the sport.  Shooting portrait photography of these girls was beyond fun. In Dana’s words, “we had sooooooooo much fun on this shoot with Seattle Mist for the cover and inside spread of DList’s January Issue. The girls had tons of personality, making it easy to tell they are truly an inspiring team of people”.  It was great having the whole team in studio and seeing the passion these girls have for the game. They also happened to make great models and perhaps we’ll have the opportunity to work with them on future projects.

We hope you’ll grab an issue when you see it on the stands to check out our portrait photography on the cover as well as learn about the girls of Seattle Mist! 🙂

Fashion Stylist & Editor: Jenascia Chakos

Jenascia Chakos rocks our socks off and we want you to know why! From the very first issue of DList she has been an avid fan and follower. Lucky for us she’s been a  fashion stylist, producer, and editor for three years at the magazine. We have had the joy of working with this fantastic gal for a little under six months and let’s just say it’s always a blast.
Jenascia consistently tries to outdo herself, making sure every issue she releases turns more than a few heads. Her energetic personality is always appreciated on set and her eye for fashion styling helps make DList’s spreads go from good to uniquely great. You can find her on set chugging a red bull or wearing her infamous fanny pack (which we absolutely love!), full of all of her favorite tools. Let’s just say, she’s always prepared! This wonderful fashion stylist is full of tricks that makes us wish she was our secret weapon on all fashion shoots Studio 3 produces.
In this busy lady’s downtime she finds ways to create recycled fashion and enjoy her adorable little son. You may also see Jenascia modeling for a few local photographers and if you are into reality TV, you may recognize her from America’s Next Top Model Season 2. She also has a way with words and won just under $50,000 on Wheel of Fortune. It’s safe to say Jenascia is anything but ordinary.
Check out Jenascia’s amazing fashion styling skills in action, from the awesome images below shot by our own photographer Dana Jonas and watching the DList video:  Paint The Town

Gettin' Our Fashion Photography on at Discovery Park!

It was a beautiful early winter day and Dana Jonas decided to take one of her favorite models out to get her fashion photography on! It was a great day to capture lens flares and the beauty of a well knit sweater. The difficulty of fashion photography lies in creating an idealistic image, that makes you not only want to seize the day, but also while wearing this season’s newest boots.
Dana Jonas does love a challenge and couldn’t believe the fall like images she was able to capture. Tricia Eastman was her model and was nothing short of exceptional for this All American beauty shoot. The inspiration behind this particular shoot was the Northwest, getting cozy and enjoying a walk around beautiful Discovery Park. Dana was able to capture images that look as if they have a natural filter. However, we must admit the best thing about this shoot is most likely the location.
If you are looking for a great place to show off your Winter fashion you should definitely check out one of our favorite locations, Discovery Park. It is situated on the Magnolia bluff overlooking the Puget Sound. It is one of the most beautiful Seattle city parks and allows for such day activities as paddle boating, kayaking, and hiking. It is basically a Northwester’s dream! The park also has a charming lighthouse that would be inviting to anyone. It’s a must to check out the beach and the old row of yellow houses. We look forward to our next shoot at this stunning Seattle park. To shoot at this park commercially, contact Seattle Parks for a permit. You can check out Dana’s images from the fashion photography shoot below and for more information on Discovery Park, check out their website!
