Jim, owner and photographer at Studio 3, has photographed Catherine numerous times. You could call her his muse. Not only is she a fantastic model and ready for any crazy ideas he throws at her, she is also an amazing musician. Which means her and Jim have a lot to talk about!

DList has commissioned Dana Jonas and Studio 3 to do editorial, fashion, and portrait photography. It is always great fun working with the lifestyle brand that represents a lavish, VIP lifestyle that includes dress, dine, drink, & dance. DList has some of the premiere events in the Northwest, including parties at local nightclubs, cover model searches, award shows, and an exclusive gold membership. It tends to be a great read full of must sees and highlights of favorite spots around Seattle.
In our recent shoot with the magazine we had the pleasure of shooting for the Seattle Mist, Seattle’s very own lingerie football league. These girls are serious athletes, practicing often and having more wins than losses. The LFL has gained popularity throughout Seattle as well of the rest of the country, with a huge tournament in Las Vegas, drawing hundreds of fans who root on the sport. Shooting portrait photography of these girls was beyond fun. In Dana’s words, “we had sooooooooo much fun on this shoot with Seattle Mist for the cover and inside spread of DList’s January Issue. The girls had tons of personality, making it easy to tell they are truly an inspiring team of people”. It was great having the whole team in studio and seeing the passion these girls have for the game. They also happened to make great models and perhaps we’ll have the opportunity to work with them on future projects.

If you haven’t figured it out by now, we love to have fun around here at Studio 3. We know the way to keep consistently working hard and putting out quality results is to occasionally indulge ourselves in fun projects. We recently got fun, funky, and dare I say it, furry with some portrait photography featuring people and their best little friends, their pets!
Just as best friends sometimes start to act alike, dress alike, and even look alike, the concept behind this fun shoot was to showcase how much these owners and their pets reflect each other and their personalities. We went bold and made the portrait photography really pop with bright, vibrant backdrops, colorful outfits, and some amazing poses by both models in each set!
Playing cute and coy in the magenta glow are Shayna Bee and Peach. Both rocking a wild and fun head of hair, we let the wind blow in their faces as they gave us their most adorable eyes. I hate to state the obvious, but they must share hair tips.
Next, sitting calmly and regally in the blue cast of the heavens above are Alyssa and Reef. Dressed in matching red tops, these two were great models! Reef sat like a pro, looking buff and cool and Alyssa did an awesome job of matching his pose. Attached at the hip, these two lovebirds were a great match. Reef visited us a few days later to pick up his portrait.
Last, possibly littlest, but definitely not least are Lauren Hale and Veronica, two women that love their bowls and aren’t afraid to show it. The two of them impressed us with their talents, Veronica being able to balance on her bowl like a champ and Lauren being able to fit into hers! Two cuties indeed, look at those noses!

No matter the time of day or what age we might be, we all love to daydream about all the things you would like to be when we grow up (you too, adults, we’re all still growing up). We thought we would offer you some super-fun inspiration! It’s got to be every photographer’s dream to get to shoot a real superhero and we at Studio 3 are all about making dreams come true. So in honor of all the daydreamers, comic book readers, Saturday morning cartoon watchers, and mighty superheroes watching over us, we used our own super powers to create some fun portrait photography in the studio!
We constructed the set for the shoot completely in studio, using everything we could find to create a real home feeling for this little Wonder Woman to strut her stuff in. Prepping for the shoot totally brought us all back to the days of playing in our living rooms for hours and hours! Rather than aiming to turn our model into the actual superhero, the concept behind the shoot was to capture the fun and whimsy of being a kid, piecing together your favorite hero’s costume with whatever you find. Our favorite parts are definitely those big cowboy boots (almost up to her knees!), her wild hair blowing majestically in the powerful winds of her fan, and of course that trusty tin foil sword!
By the looks of those stuffed dolls all around her, it looks like our Wonder Woman’s got quite a bit of citizens to look out for! Keeping imaginations running is the most important exercise there is the creative industry, so we always encourage routine daydreaming around the studio. Wherever you are, in whatever you’re doing, don’t forget to take a moment every day to think like a kid!

It’s that time of year again. Chilly weather, goofy sweaters, stockings, snowmen, reds and greens, oh and presents! Heck yes we love Christmas time…who doesn’t? Here at our lovely Seattle location, the Studio 3 team’s been getting our dose of all things Christmas, decorating, shopping, loving each other, and all that jazz. There is one thing we’re missing a bit of though and it’s one of the key ingredients to a classic white Christmas (hint: it’s the white part).
Here in Seattle, a fluffy blanket of snow makes for a real love/hate relationship. We LOVE to play in it, turn it into cute snowmen, throw balls of it at our dearest friends, and catch it on our tongues (missing school because of is also pretty great). We HATE walking through it, getting it in our socks, when it turns to slush, and most of all driving through it. We don’t see each other much, snow, and us Seattlites and the Studio 3 team was feeling the need for some snowfall around the workplace. So what’d we do? We made it snow, of course!
One of the perks of being a photo studio is having props galore at our fingertips, so our holiday parties, aside from being super fun and wild, are always beautifully decorated. Check us out below in our new photo from this year’s party. We pulled out our favorite Christmas props and got warm and cozy under the studio snowfall. Some things of importance to note and think about: Chris’ tiny cup and huge mullet, the mystery of what Alex is afraid of, and our little plant friend that came to hang out for the photo.
We had a blast and can’t wait for all the family and friends time coming up in the next few days. And of course, we can’t wait to get through that wrapping paper to all those tempting new toys. Here’s to hoping you have as great a Christmas season! Happy Holidays from Studio 3!

What do handlebars, pencils, cops, walruses, and Salvador Dali all have in common? They’re all types of mustaches! Everyone’s favorite piece of manly facial adornment, the Mo, slang for Mustache, has taken over the month of November and Studio 3! We got in on the fun with some portrait photography, inviting over a dozen men and their Mo’s to our Seattle studio to get their mugs shot. From all ages and backgrounds, all lengths and styles of mustache, we captured the essence of what being a “Man with a Mustache” is all about.
Movember, as it is known, is international awareness month for prostate cancer. Men everywhere are encouraged to grow their own signature mustache for the month of November, raising awareness and money for world-class men’s health groups that combat prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health challenges, including Live Strong and the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Beginning in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has since grown into an international campaign. Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, as we are called, raise funds by asking family and friends to donate in support of the mustached month. Mo Bros start the month with a clean shave and let their Mo’s grow all month, to the delight of themselves and those around them. Last year, the campaign raised over $255,000 worldwide! These funds are used to help support research projects, life support groups, as well as awareness and education efforts. Through their efforts and the organizations they support, Movember hopes “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”.
The official Movember website includes the history of the month-long celebration, as well as dozens of ways you can help support the cause, including some hilarious Movember-inspired merchandise, from t-shirts to mustache-shaped cuff links.
Hired by the Super Computing 2009 Conference team, Henry Ngan of Studio 3 was the only official show photographer to shoot documentary photography of Al Gore at the Portland event. Al Gore was featured as the keynote speaker, addressing the theme, “Computing for a Changing World.”
In Henry’s words, “The highlight of the conference was shooting documentary photography of Al Gore. I was the only media allowed in a private meeting with the conference leaders and the former United States Vice President. It was a true honor.” This was the 21st annual conference, recognized globally as the premier international event on High Performance Computing or HPC.
The show floor at the Oregon Convention Center was the epicenter of enormous bandwidth flow to various HPC computing consortiums around the world. There was the bandwidth challenge whereby various teams were competing in order to set new records for sustained data transfer among storage systems from around the world. They were able to achieve data flow of 110 gigabits per second (Gbps), sustained indefinitely among clusters of servers on the show floor and those at Caltech, Michigan, San Diego, Florida, Fermilab, Brookhaven, CERN, Brazil, Korea, and Estonia. In the LHC challenge, a peak bidirectional data flow of 119 Gbps was achieved. We will be able to solve the world’s problems in a shorter time span due to achievements we see today. We are talking globally distributed data analysis here in order for worldwide collaboration amongst physicists, scientists, and engineers that Henry Ngan was able to capture. There is just so much data that needs to move between all these supercomputers as quickly as possible that it is truly mind boggling to the average person and Studio 3 was happy to shoot these hi tech geniuses. As a photographer and a computing junky (Geek), Henry Ngan was able to capture and experience all this electrifying excitement on the convention floor in Portland. I used Canon 5D MkIIs for this shoot with various lenses from a 70-200mm to a 16-35mm wide angle to capture all the events unfolding from keynotes, to ribbon cutting, to information sessions, to group shots of various organizations. We had an older Canon 5D in the corner of the main floor doing time-lapse photography of the whole event. The 5D MkII performed well using high ISO settings with little noise problems. I had to be able to capture all the ambient lighting because many of the exhibits were lit up glitzy like Las Vegas. Canon speedlites were used to fill in or create some direction in some cases.
