We were given a jingle by Eastside Distilling to get into the holiday spirit a little early with some videos promoting their new Holiday Gift Pack of themed liqueurs (yum!).
Our videos for their Potato Vodka and Marionberry Whiskey had impressed Eastside with their quality and had them coming back to Studio 3 for their holiday promotional needs (click on the links above to check those videos out!). Eastside had been using the videos on social media online, and found them to do well and create that coveted buzz – so more online videos were in short order.
Director David King crafted 4 videos promoting the Holiday Gift Pack and special recipes for each of the themed liqueurs: Egg Nog “Advocaat,” Peppermint Bark, and Holiday Spiced Liqueur.
For the main 30-second promotional video the Team approached the brief by creating a vintage Mad Men-style office holiday party, with set dec, lighting, and tone to the piece all 60’s-themed.
We then created festive recipe-specific videos for each liqueur:

The Hawthorne Flip

¾ oz Burnside Bourbon

Dash of red chili pepper (optional)

Dry shake, add ice, and shake again, strain and serve in a flute with peppermint chocolate drizzle and red chili flakes or a mint leaf.

.5 oz Whipped Cream

Cocoa Powder

In a mixing glass, add all ingredients over ice and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with cocoa powder.
At the end of the shoot day, we decided to put together an extra short video: “Bad Santa,” which is what might happen at the end of the night once Santa has finished his holiday duty.

“There are so many tiny, beautiful, funny, tragic moments in your life — how are you going to remember them all?”
We’ve begun a new tradition of having the Studio 3 Team record videos of tiny, beautiful, funny, tragic, and amazing 1-second moments in their lives. For our newest piece, we’ve edited another 30-second video short from September that encapsulates what we’re all about.
Studio 3 is an awesome place to work, made up of a band of cool, creative talent. We also offer videography services to discerning clients who need the very best for their commercial shoots – and it’s our video Director David King who creates all of our videos.
The above video was just for fun, but Director David King and our Team regularly produce professional videos that effectively tell the brand story and exceed client expectations. Our process begins when a client reaches out to Studio 3 with a creative conundrum. We get into the client’s head and solve their problem utilizing our technical filmmaking skills to create a compelling visual story. Check out some of the videos we have produced for past clients here.
Each clip in the video is a snapshot, a moment from the past month, compiled by Mr. King into this upbeat vignette. In reality, these 30 seconds = “a month in the life” of Studio 3. Get a glimpse into what it’s like to hang out with us for a month (in one-second intervals):

Recently, our video department had the exciting opportunity of shooting for Anthro Corporation. Anthro started with a plan to make technology for furniture. Our plan was to take their vision, highlight their latest addition, and bring it to life. Director David King speaks more in depth about putting together this clean and subtly sexy clip!

For anyone who has a job where spending long stretches sitting at a desk is a requirement, I’m sure there are many a day you wish you could just stand up for a while, stretch the back, get the blood flowing back into the legs, and keep on working. When I’m wearing my editor’s hat, it’s not uncommon to pull 10-12 hour shifts sitting in front of the computer. Because of this, when we renovated our edit suite here at Studio 3 Films, finding an adjustable work surface that could be used while sitting or standing was top of the wish list. Once you do any research at all on the subject, the company that tops your search list is Portland-based Anthro Technology Furniture. As an editor, I’ve been aware of Anthro’s product line for many years and was thrilled to be able to build our new edit suite around a desk from the Anthro Elevate series. Motorized height adjustment, tilting keyboard surface, cable management and adjustable monitor arms make this workstation infinitely adjustable for maximum ergonomic comfort. I’m standing as I write this!

Shortly after getting the new desk, Anthro approached us with a need for a video, showcasing one of their desks for an upcoming trade show. While I knew Anthro for their creative field products, they are also very big in the education and medical furniture fields. The product that we were asked to feature is called “Steve’s Station”; a Radiology Desk, featuring acoustic panels, dimmable ambient light, as well as Anthro’s signature height adjustment. The folks at Anthro had a vision of showcasing Steve’s Station as if it were a luxury car, using sexy, low-key lighting, subtle camera movement and a moody music score. I’ve worked on dozens of car commercials over the years so I knew exactly what they wanted and thought it would be great fun to translate that look and feel to an adjustable workstation. It was certainly easier to light without all the reflective surfaces you get from an automobile.

-David King

About two months ago, we were approached by Portland artist Gage Hamilton, the organizer of a public mural art project “Forest for the Trees Northwest“, as a possible site for one of 10 new murals that would be going up the week of August 19th. The south wall of Studio 3 was of particular interest due to it’s size, accessibility and well, it looked like it could use some artistic love. Just standing in the parking lot looking at the vast orange canvas that would be transformed into an original piece of art, we wanted to find a way to document the process. All we were told was that the artists would be painting for 5 days, that the outcome would be a surprise and that the result would be epic and spectacular.

After much internal discussion around documenting this creativity, we decided the best way to document the week of painting was going to be the creation of a time lapse video. We set up a GoPro Hero 3 on the roof of our neighbor, the Jolly Roger Bar and Grill and recorded from dawn til dusk for 5 days. The GoPro also took an exposure every 30 seconds. Through our friends at Star Rentals, we were able to provide the two scissor lifts to the artists to assist with the project.
Hawaiian artist, Kamea Hadar (@kameahadar), and Australian artist David “Meggs” Hooke (@houseofmeggs), worked throughout the week and gave us an amazing addition to the studio and the Hawthorne neighborhood.
Check out the resulting time lapse video and the amazing art that the guys created. Better yet, drop by the studio and check it out in person. ~ David King / Director / Studio 3 Films
Me neither! That’s the great thing about life here at Studio 3 Films. You learn something new with each project whether you thought you needed it or not.
Our long-time client, Stanley Hydraulic Tools, came to us with another product launch and a desire for a video to generate excitement within the sales force. The HP TWIN8 Hydraulic Power Unit is unique in the industry in that it can run two tools at once without a drop in power output. An important feature if there’s a water main break and you need to break up the asphalt and start pumping water simultaneously.
The Stanley folks wanted some consistency in style from the video we did for their railroad spike puller – the SPL-31, but needed to have the whole thing shot in studio. Dramatic lighting on wet concrete and camera movement mixed with rotating the unit on our industrial strength turntable gave us the look they wanted. Combine that with some existing footage from an actual job site, a rocking score and a killer voiceover and we were able to launch the HP TWIN8 in style.
Have a look at our latest production for Stanley Hydraulic Tools and tell me you don’t want one.

One of our favorite places to visit and shoot, is the beautiful campus of Washington State University, Vancouver. The scenic views from the campus’ hilltop location are breathtaking and change dramatically through out the seasons. Our crew visited the campus again for our second video collaboration with WUSV’s marketing department. Here are a few words from our Film Director David King.

For the second video in our series for Washington State University Vancouver, we were asked to help the university highlight how “non-traditional” students thrive at the Vancouver campus. With an enrollment of just over three thousand students, an average class size of twenty, and a student to faculty ratio of 1:14, WSUV truly caters to the student that is serious about furthering their education without sacrificing the whole university experience.

For this video, we directed our focus at transfer students, students that have families, those that hold down jobs outside of school, and those that are looking for help with financial aid. We spent the day on campus, interviewing five students with very diverse backgrounds and career aspirations. The common thread for each of them was how easy it was to be a student at Washington State University Vancouver while working and in some cases, raising a family. It was great to hear them talk about what makes Washington State University Vancouver so special.

We were able to utilize some of the scenic footage we captured on our earlier visit in the fall, before school had started for the year, as well as shooting some new footage with the campus bustling with student activity. The video ultimately ended up on the WSUV website and is viewed often by prospective students who may be looking for a university that will fit their unique circumstance.

Check it out here, or visit the WSUV website at http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu.

Hog Wild, a Portland toy company and one of our long-time photography clients, came to us with a need for two video commercials to launch their newest products: Click Shots and Power Poppers. Both spots were to be shot in studio, featuring kids, voiceover and a lot of action. We brought in frequent collaborator and Director of Photography Andy Maser with his RED Epic for the shoot. We wanted to shoot with the RED for a couple of reasons: 240 frames per second, slow motion would help us capture the fast action of the products and the 4k resolution at 24 frames would give us the option of doing some fast, optical zooms in post production.

We shot the spots over two days; one day at Studio 3, and because our stage was already booked for another shoot, we shot the next day at Picture This Studios. While not professionals, the kids were fantastic. The RED Epic performed as expected. Two weeks later, the post production was done and the spots were on their way to Hong Kong for one of the biggest toy trade shows in the world.

“Studio 3 produced two .30 TV commercials for us. Both were for toy products brand new to the market and both need high energy and pizzazz. We gave them a decent script and storyboard but what they came back with based upon their creative input, camera techniques, direction and post production was a mile above where we started. We’ve used other companies for our TV spots in the past but we’re incredibly happy with the results we received from Studio 3. Three thumbs up for their creative smarts, direction and technical expertise.” President/CEO Hogwild

We are so very excited to partner with Washington State University in Vancouver to highlight their beautiful NW campus. We shot the campus over three days to capture student interaction, campus activity and the amazing NW environment. For insight into this video project read below to hear from our Studio 3 Films Director, David King!

When approached by Washington State University to produce a recruiting video for their Vancouver, WA campus, the questions we asked ourselves were, “what makes this campus unique?” and “how can we use that to help tell the story of Washington State University Vancouver?” All it took was a visit to the beautiful campus to answer both of those questions. The setting, with views of Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens, along with the diverse student body tells the story of a small, local campus with all of the amenities of a major University.
We shot the footage over three consecutive days. One day before the students returned for the fall term in order to get some beauty shots of the buildings and surroundings. Then a week later when the students returned to school to get the feel of student life. One more day to shoot a couple of time-lapse sequences and it was time to edit.
We thought at first that a voiceover accompanying the video, explaining the virtues of the WSUV campus would be the way to go, but soon realized that the imagery itself said plenty about what it was like to attend school here. The administration came to us with a desire to show how a local campus could give a prospective student the large university experience and we were able to accomplish that by just letting the campus speak for itself.

Studio 3 Films is so excited to partner with Stanley Hydraulic Tools, headquartered in Portland, Oregon to highlight their newest product release through a dynamic Studio 3 video! Check out the video above and stay tuned for more to come! For a little bit of insight into this video shoot check out words from our Director of Video Production, David King.

Stanley Hydraulics is introducing a line of new railroad tools over then next few months and they came to us to create a video to introduce the first one, the SPL-31 Spike Puller. To compound the challenge, we were on a very tight deadline. The job was awarded on a Tuesday and due to railroad track availability, we had to shoot the entire spot just two days later. On top of that, the video was to be presented to the executives a week after that. A quick concept meeting with our client and a late night storyboard session later, we were ready to shoot.
We began the day at the BNSF train yard in Vancouver, Washington and had to get twenty-four shots off in a little under 3 hours. Thanks to the professionalism of the rail crew and our efficient planning, we made it with a few minutes to spare. From there we were off to our studio to get the product beauty shots. Utilizing our large turntable to spin the SPL-31 under some dramatic lighting, we got all we needed to put together a compelling, informative and entertaining video.
In post-production, we wanted an intro to the video that would immediately grab the viewers attention. Continuing with the railroad theme, we used a stock image of a rail car and animated the Stanley logo being punched into the metal, using Adobe After Effects. This bit of animation could then easily be used for future product videos by simply changing out the product logos.
The video was completed with some driving music and a powerful voiceover, giving it the industrial feel that Stanley Hydraulic tools is known for, throughout the industry.

As media shifts to the internet, today’s consumer is spending more time in a virtual world, where it’s all about images and video content. So when somebody wants to learn about your business, they go through social media channels and click “Play”. Video is the best way to showcase who you are, what you do and how you do it. It’s the new mission statement.

When Jude Kirstein, owner and founder of Sugar Wheel Works, came to us with the desire to reach out to her client base in a new way we knew that creating a business overview through video was the perfect solution. We met with Jude and saw her studio space, outlined some ideas on paper and really tried to find a way to connect her personality with her business and her client community at large. Studio 3 Films brings you our latest Video Production and some insight from Video Director, David King, on the process of creating this dynamic project:

Our first step in putting together the video for Sugar Wheel Works was to find out from Jude what she wanted to accomplish by having a video. Two weeks before shooting, we sat down with her at her studio and got to know her. Sure we wanted to know what she did and what made Sugar Wheel Works stand out from the competition, but more importantly we wanted to know what her business meant to her and what story she had to tell. A simple video showing the inside of her shop and explaining the nuts and bolts of wheel building is a commodity; we wanted to help her tell her story so that her customers could get to know the woman behind the wheels.
We brought cinematographer Andy Maser to the project who in turn, brought a ton of action cinematography experience along with his RED Scarlet camera and 12′ jib arm. Hanging the RED out the back of the studio van on the jib got us some great shots of Jude riding and brought a unique style to the video that could not have been achieved with a basic camera rig. We shot the majority of the footage in one day with another day of pick-up shots once editing had begun.

Working alongside Jude, we created a 2.5 minute video and a quick 30 second teaser to get the story of Sugar Wheel Works out to the world. We wanted to show potential customers what to expect when they walk into the shop, give them a feel for meeting with Jude, as well as a little cycling eye candy. Check out the full video above!
