Meet Corban: Digital Artist, Video Editor, Animator, Illustrator, an all-around Artist!

We are so excited to introduce Corban who’s now a part of the Digital Art Studio 3 team in Portland! He has many amazing talents. Read below to learn more:

Digital Artist Corban Monger

“I’m a renaissance man, jack-of-all-trades, or as Wile E. Coyote put it: “Super Genius”. The universe is my playground. Even though I’m not yet a master, I’m a journeyman at so many things I can do practically anything. This curious state of being comes from my insatiable thirst for knowledge. There’s always something new to discover. My mind rebells at stagnation. I need problems to solve. I need work to create. Who needs television when the real world is one big sandbox?

Born and raised in Oregon, I was encouraged to follow in the footsteps of my grandfather by becoming an engineer. It certainly made sense considering my aptitude for math and science. Electrical engineering in particular seemed a good choice. I loved technology and what could be done with it. Being on the cutting edge of electronics seemed an exciting prospect.
I enrolled in engineering school at the University of Portland. By day I was your mild mannered engineering student. But by night I was an artist teaching myself drawing, animation, and graphic design. Often people would ask me “What are you doing in engineering school? You should be an artist!” And they were probably right.
The arts were part of my life since childhood. I would draw my favorite cartoon characters or sculpt them out of clay. I’d listen to radio plays or construct cities with Lego bricks on the living room floor. In school I was involved with music and theater, playing multiple instruments, acting in Shakespeare plays, and singing in musicals. From drawing and sculpture to film and theater, the arts captured my attention. But, strangely, it never struck me to pursue it as a career.
The summer after graduation, it finally dawned on me that I was meant to be an artist. Engineering just wasn’t as entirely satisfying as I had hoped. The work was fairly easy. But life in a cubicle didn’t sound exciting or creative. It sounded like a dependable boring job. And that wasn’t really what I wanted.
So it was off to DigiPen Institute of Technology for four years to get educated in the digital arts. It was during that time I fell in love with story, film, and animation. Storyboarding and video editing in particular are my two favorite parts of production. In fact the digital arts as a whole have been wonderfully engaging. As an artist you need to learn everything there is to know about everything to synthesize new art. And the technical nature of the industry satisfies the part of my brain that enjoys solving the puzzles of process.

After working in Seattle for a year, once school was finished, I finally returned to what I consider home: Portland. Seattle was nice, and one day I may return, but for now I’m right where I want to be.” ~ Corban Monger, Digital Artist/Studio3, Inc.

Studio 3 Films highlights Stanley Hydraulic product!

We are so excited about our continued partnership with Stanley Hydraulics Tools! Check out the video below and stay tuned for more to come! For a little bit of insight into this video shoot check out words from the Director and head of our video department, David King.

So who knew, that up until now, it was impossible to use more than one Hydraulic tool at a time, using the same power source? Me neither! That’s the great thing about life here at Studio 3 Films. You learn something new with each project whether you thought you needed it or not.
Our long-time client, Stanley Hydraulic Tools, came to us with another product launch and a desire for a video to generate excitement within the sales force. The HP TWIN8 Hydraulic Power Unit is unique in the industry in that it can run two tools at once without a drop in power output. An important feature if there’s a water main break and you need to break up the asphalt and start pumping water simultaneously.
The Stanley folks wanted some consistency in style from the video we did for their railroad spike puller – the SPL-31, but needed to have the whole thing shot in studio. Dramatic lighting on wet concrete and camera movement mixed with rotating the unit on our industrial strength turntable gave us the look they wanted. Combine that with some existing footage from an actual job site, a rocking score and a killer voiceover and we were able to launch the HP TWIN8 in style.
Have a look at our latest production for Stanley Hydraulic Tools and tell me you don’t want one.

Studio 3 Films Director David King and Hog Wild's President Joe Rooper discuss their latest video project!

Studio 3 Films, Behind the Scenes, Click Shot Commercial Video, Power Popper Commercial Video

Studio 3 Films is so excited to partner with Hogwild in Portland to highlight their latest products! For insight into this video project read below to hear from our Director, David King!

Hog Wild, a Portland toy company and one of our long-time photography clients, came to us with a need for two video commercials to launch their newest products: Click Shots and Power Poppers. Both spots were to be shot in studio, featuring kids, voiceover and a lot of action.  We brought in frequent collaborator and Director of Photography Andy Maser with his RED Epic for the shoot.  We wanted to shoot with the RED for a couple of reasons: 240 frames per second, slow motion would help us capture the fast action of the products and the 4k resolution at 24 frames would give us the option of doing some fast, optical zooms in post production.

We shot the spots over two days; one day at Studio 3, and because our stage was already booked for another shoot, we shot the next day at Picture This Studios. While not professionals, the kids were fantastic. The RED Epic performed as expected. Two weeks later, the post production was done and the spots were on their way to Hong Kong for one of the biggest toy trade shows in the world.

“Studio 3 produced two .30 TV commercials for us. Both were for toy products brand new to the market and both need high energy and pizzazz. We gave them a decent script and storyboard but what they came back with based upon their creative input, camera techniques, direction and post production was a mile above where we started. We’ve used other companies for our TV spots in the past but we’re incredibly happy with the results we received from Studio 3.  Three thumbs up for their creative smarts, direction and technical expertise.” President/CEO Hogwild

Studio 3 Films Director David King WSU Vancouver!

We are so very excited to partner with Washington State University in Vancouver to highlight their beautiful NW campus. We shot the campus over three days to capture student interaction, campus activity and the amazing NW environment. For insight into this video project read below to hear from our Studio 3 Films Director, David King!

When approached by Washington State University to produce a recruiting video for their Vancouver, WA campus, the questions we asked ourselves were, “what makes this campus unique?” and “how can we use that to help tell the story of Washington State University Vancouver?” All it took was a visit to the beautiful campus to answer both of those questions. The setting, with views of Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens, along with the diverse student body tells the story of a small, local campus with all of the amenities of a major University.
We shot the footage over three consecutive days.  One day before the students returned for the fall term in order to get some beauty shots of the buildings and surroundings. Then a week later when the students returned to school to get the feel of student life. One more day to shoot a couple of time-lapse sequences and it was time to edit.
We thought at first that a voiceover accompanying the video, explaining the virtues of the WSUV campus would be the way to go, but soon realized that the imagery itself said plenty about what it was like to attend school here.  The administration came to us with a desire to show how a local campus could give a prospective student the large university experience and we were able to accomplish that by just letting the campus speak for itself.

Studio 3 Films highlights The Spike Puller!

Studio 3 Films is so excited to partner with Stanley Hydraulic Tools, headquartered in Portland, Oregon to highlight their newest product release through a dynamic Studio 3 video! Check out the video above and stay tuned for more to come! For a little bit of insight into this video shoot check out words from our Director of Video Production, David King.

Stanley Hydraulics is introducing a line of new railroad tools over then next few months and they came to us to create a video to introduce the first one, the SPL-31 Spike Puller. To compound the challenge, we were on a very tight deadline. The job was awarded on a Tuesday and due to railroad track availability, we had to shoot the entire spot just two days later. On top of that, the video was to be presented to the executives a week after that. A quick concept meeting with our client and a late night storyboard session later, we were ready to shoot.
We began the day at the BNSF train yard in Vancouver, Washington and had to get twenty-four shots off in a little under 3 hours. Thanks to the professionalism of the rail crew and our efficient planning, we made it with a few minutes to spare. From there we were off to our studio to get the product beauty shots. Utilizing our large turntable to spin the SPL-31 under some dramatic lighting, we got all we needed to put together a compelling, informative and entertaining video.
In post-production, we wanted an intro to the video that would immediately grab the viewers attention. Continuing with the railroad theme, we used a stock image of a rail car and animated the Stanley logo being punched into the metal, using Adobe After Effects. This bit of animation could then easily be used for future product videos by simply changing out the product logos.
The video was completed with some driving music and a powerful voiceover, giving it the industrial feel that Stanley Hydraulic tools is known for, throughout the industry.

Studio 3 Films Video Production Case Study The Business Overview

As media shifts to the internet, today’s consumer is spending more time in a virtual world, where it’s all about images and video content. So when somebody wants to learn about your business, they go through social media channels and click “Play”. Video is the best way to showcase who you are, what you do and how you do it. It’s the new mission statement.

When Jude Kirstein, owner and founder of Sugar Wheel Works, came to us with the desire to reach out to her client base in a new way we knew that creating a business overview through video was the perfect solution. We met with Jude and saw her studio space, outlined some ideas on paper and really tried to find a way to connect her personality with her business and her client community at large. Studio 3 Films brings you our latest Video Production and some insight from Video Director, David King, on the process of creating this dynamic project:

Our first step in putting together the video for Sugar Wheel Works was to find out from Jude what she wanted to accomplish by having a video. Two weeks before shooting, we sat down with her at her studio and got to know her. Sure we wanted to know what she did and what made Sugar Wheel Works stand out from the competition, but more importantly we wanted to know what her business meant to her and what story she had to tell. A simple video showing the inside of her shop and explaining the nuts and bolts of wheel building is a commodity; we wanted to help her tell her story so that her customers could get to know the woman behind the wheels.
We brought cinematographer Andy Maser to the project who in turn, brought a ton of action cinematography experience along with his RED Scarlet camera and 12′ jib arm. Hanging the RED out the back of the studio van on the jib got us some great shots of Jude riding and brought a unique style to the video that could not have been achieved with a basic camera rig. We shot the majority of the footage in one day with another day of pick-up shots once editing had begun.

Working alongside Jude, we created a 2.5 minute video and a quick 30 second teaser to get the story of Sugar Wheel Works out to the world. We wanted to show potential customers what to expect when they walk into the shop, give them a feel for meeting with Jude, as well as a little cycling eye candy. Check out the full video above!

These watches have been on trend, seen on celebrities and has become a Seattle favorite. The timepieces are all so colorful, which of course matches spunky Dana Jonas’ style well. She was nothing short of stoked to have the opportunity to highlight such a fun product, she definitely brought the lifestyle of the brand to life. This fashion and lifestyle photography shoot was a blast! From the one of a kind designer fashion by Alexander Aesthetic, to the great talent from Seattle Model’s Guild and the amazing product which brought us all together, it was definitely a shoot to remember. Dhruva, the CEO of shocking goat, is a hoot and none of this would have been possible without his genius mind when it came to how he wanted his product represented. One of the best collaborations I’ve been a part of to date 🙂 Also, I should give a shout-out to the amazing stylist and producer, Kayleigh Capelle! It has been one of my favorite shoots to date. Lots of laughs and fun times! You should definitely check out the video, to see what my energy is like on set. And, oh, don’t judge me for my potty mouth at the end of the video, haha!

Fashion Photography with Matt Jebbia

It’s Fashion Friday, which means Matt Jebbia is getting behind the camera to shoot some great fashion photography. This time around he decided to get the whole team involved. Check out this amazing behind the scenes footage, edited by David King.

Our favorite photo shoots here at the studio involve the whole team. We paired it with one of our Martini Thursdays and we had a recipe for success! With feet tapping to some Beyoncé jams our spirits were soaring as Matt Jebbia took the reigns as Photographer and Creative Director. Matt wanted a fun, upbeat shoot to highlight local finds and gorgeous shoes. A word from the photographer on collaboration and shooting with two cinematographers on the same set:

All of the brainstorming sessions and days spent rummaging through vintage clothing stores paid off. With myself behind the camera and two cinematographers filming behind the scenes, it was a bit crazy at times trying to avoid bumping into one another. But once the shoot was in full swing it all seemed to just click. I really enjoyed working with everyone involved. It’s true the best work comes from a collaboration. I absolutely love shooting fashion and all the styling worked together to create a chic, final product that everyone is proud of. Big thanks to model Megan Nuchols, Hair/Makeup artist Celena Rubin, Styling by our own Sarah Ludwig, Cinematographers Andy Maser/David King and thanks to all of the Studio 3 team.

Here are a few snapshots taken while on set.

Drink Photography: Pisco Sour

In the great DIY spirit of Portland, we decided to take a stab at creating our own version of the Pisco Sour after salivating over Craig Wagner’s amazing drink photography, shot at local watering hole Circa 33.  Pisco is an unaged brandy, that has a very unique flavor to it. The Pisco Sour happens to be a great drink to try out this unique spirit on. No one does it quite like Circa 33, but we thought we would give it a shot. With cocktail shaker and martini glasses in hand, we took a stab at the delicious cocktail. Since we already had the opportunity to shoot the drink at Circa 33, we decided to film our personal creation. As you can see, it was quite the happy hour where Pisco Sours were enjoyed by all!

[youtube 4lTMmWSNLIk]

Thanks to Producer Rachel Meyer for stepping up to the plate as our in house Mixologist and Videographer/Digital Artist David King for the documentation of our taste test. It was great getting a chance to taste the creation that Craig’s drink photography was inspired after. We have been begging him to go shoot more cocktails, to inspire perhaps a weekly happy hour! Maybe we’ll even get a chance to try it with food. If you make this delicious drink at home, we recommend you try the Pisco Sour with a South American inspired meal. 🙂
Here’s the recipe, so you can make your own Pisco Sour at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Ounce Pisco
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
  • 1 Ounce Simple Syrup
  • 1 Egg White
  • 3 dashes Angostura Bitters

Preparation:

  1. Pour the pisco, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg into a cocktail shaker, then fill with ice.
  2. Shake Vigorously and Well.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Add Angostura bitters to taste.
  5. Enjoy!
