Drones have become a standard in photography and videography. The innovative use of drones can be seen in all types of media, marketing, and advertising. Brands such as Red Bull, Coca-Cola, and GE have turned to aerial imagery on their campaigns. Likewise, a Budweiser commercial took to the sky recently to showcase their switch to 100% renewable electricity from wind power. A message portrayed powerfully by flying above the turbines.

As the use of drones has evolved, so has photography. The technology has advanced rapidly in recent years making it a highly sought-after service. The creativity of drone photography and originality of drone videography leave a lasting impression. From above, everything and anything takes on a different shape, color, and texture.

The drone market has grown tremendously. Now more than ever drones allow access to artistic landscapes and imaginative angles. These creative heights would otherwise be difficult to photograph without cost prohibitive, and somewhat dangerous methods. (Cranes, planes, and ladders…yikes.)

Our Process: From Start To Finish With Studio 3

DA_15622DT_Lexus Fish_DA_1500
When Studio 3 begins a photography or branding project, our first step is to sit down with the client and dream up ideas. Collaborating on a concept might involve a handful of approaches, depending on the project at hand – anything from examining examples of similar work, creative brainstorming with our in-house team, and establishing a shared visual language using Style Guides, Mood Boards, or Pinterest. Below you can see an example of what a typical brainstorming session looks like at Studio 3.
IMG_5522Once an idea is hatched, our Producer-Extraordinaire Eva Goldfarb kicks it into high-gear – scheduling stylists, organizing set builds, balancing budgets, and handling any propping/costuming as needed. This work frees up our clients and photographers to stay in a creative mindset, and not get caught up in the operational details of the project.

Forever perfecting his craft, Craig does what it takes to get the perfect shot – even if it means inventing a new piece of equipment specifically for the shoot at hand.

4 Unique Ways Video Can Stop The Scroll

19511383_10155447389452486_2912239862277385559_n
As marketing trends continue to evolve, it’s clear that video is still far-and-away one of the most effective tools in a marketer’s toolbox. In fact, it’s said that more than 500 million hours of videos are watched every single day on Youtube alone! Here at Studio 3, we’re committed to unravelling the mechanics of how exactly to best take advantage of video’s effectiveness. Afterall, between Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter – the potential audience-reach is staggering. At Studio 3, we’re obsessed with answering the question: what makes people watch or walk? Because let’s face it, most people will scroll right past your content, or briefly hover over it. So we’ve put together a list of 4 unique ways that you can utilize video to stop the scroll, pique interest, and generate organic engagement online. Many of these principles extend beyond merely Social Media Marketing, but can also be applied to sales, SEO, and Lead Generation. These are the same techniques we use here at Studio 3, and when you partner with us, you can rest assured that we always employ the latest and greatest social media trends.

  1. HOOK THE AUDIENCE

Let’s be honest: attention spans are short. It’s crucial to stop people in their tracks; whether through quick editing, bold colors, or an outrageous premise. You want to be eye-catching and unique from everything else people see in their feed. Adopting a  ‘think-outside-the-box’ mentality will increase your odds of pulling a scroller into your world. Cute animals dressed as people never fails. In a sense, we’ve become the speed daters of storytelling. (shout-out to the amazing folks at the The Pixie Project!)

  1. INCLUDE CAPTIONS

Did you know that 85% of videos on Facebook and Instagram are watched on mute? This creates a unique challenge for marketers and videographers, demanding a more visual storytelling style be used. So whatever dialogue IS included, it is absolutely essential to use captions in order to get your message across. Neglecting this step will cause an enormous number of potential viewers to scroll right past your video, simply because they are unable or unwilling to un-mute their sound. That’s why Studio 3 always recommends including captioning. It’s an important step not to be neglected!

  1. USE PEOPLE, TELL A STORY

People are interested in people! Including a person (or groups of people) in the first few seconds of your video will double the audience retention rate. It also presents an opportunity to tell a story, or set up an obstacle for your character to overcome. Storytelling is another useful tactic that holds people’s’ attention, as long as the sequence of events is easy to follow.

  1. FLASH YOUR LOGO AND USE BOLD GRAPHICS

Often a few choice words in bold graphics are all it takes to stop a scroller. If they have an idea of what they are getting into – and your logo or choice of colors intrigues them – then they are more likely to give your video their precious time. Animation, slideshows, and gifs are great options! These 4 techniques are just the tip of the video-marketing iceberg. And due to the ever-changing nature of social media, keeping on top of these fluctuating trends and marketing-methods is a full-time job all it’s own. That’s why so many companies and brands choose to partner with Studio 3! Not only do we have an entire department dedicated to social media marketing here in the studio, we’ve also got you covered on everything from creative production meetings, to music selection. At Studio 3, YOU are the creative agent, and WE are here to be your partner – developing your concepts and making your video+photography ideas come to life.

Brand Identity; Telling YOUR Story Through Photography and Video

In an era of constant online noise, brand identity becomes quintessential. Customers are seeking not only quality, but also an authentic buying experience; the real people behind the business. They are seeking companies with similar values and lifestyles as their own.
How do you build an unmistakable brand identity? How do you tell your story? Whether you are creating a new ad campaign, or updating your catalogue’s product photography, every image should speak to your customers.
Once you have defined your brand, you can begin to effectively market it. That’s where we come in. Studio 3, Inc. works with you to create personal visual solutions. We show the world how awesome you are.
Let’s take a closer look at how different photos craft different emotional responses. In other words, what your photography is saying about your brand.
1.   Your Colorways; Cool vs. Warm
View over Side of Boat
Colors evoke emotion. Cool colors calm, while warm colors educe action—like this photo for Nike that encourages me to get out of this chair and go for a run.
Nike Athlete Running
2.   Your Lighting; Studio vs. Natural
Whether your image is sun-soaked or sleekly structured, the quality can’t be compromised.
Glass of Whiskey with Ice Dropped In
This beautiful cocktail shot for Seattle Magazine is captured with a splash! Inspiring thought on what a customer should do next (hint: buy some whiskey). Need help deciding? Here are Five new Washington Whiskeys to Try.
Two Smiling Women Drinking Coca-Cola
Embracing the brand identity of Coca-Cola, natural lighting was used to flood the scene with a sense of summer. Now that’s affective lifestyle photography.
3.   Your Audience; Outdoor vs. Luxury
Who is your target market? What do they value? Creating environments for your product takes target market research.
Hiker Wearing Danner Boots
What better way to appeal to Danner Boot’s outdoor customer, while staying true to the Brand’s value of craftsmanship, than to put their boots to the test in the Pacific Northwest.

“Hold a Danner boot in your hand and you’ll notice the hand crafted precision. Try it on and you’ll feel the difference. Test it against the elements and you’ll appreciate the value of a product that is built to last.”   -Danner, Since 1932

Jimmy Choo Red Shoes
However, when your marketing luxury like Jimmy Choo, the environment changes with the contrasting brand identity.

“A 21st Century Luxury Accessories Brand, with shoes at its heart, offering an empowered sense of glamour and a playfully daring Spirit.”   – Jimmy Choo

4.   Your Appearance; Organic vs. Styled
Cook Making Pasta
Are you showing a process or presenting it’s end result? As brands and agencies move towards targeting the holistic customer, we see the shift manifest in an increase of lifestyle photography… And that’s in addition to the perfect product shot, 360-degree spin, and detail so good you can almost feel it. It’s a comprehensive marketing approach. You are your brand, and we are your people for all things photography, videography, and retouching.
Plate of Pasta
5.   Your Quality; iPhone vs. Professional Photographer
If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional, just wait until you hire an amateur… said a brilliant person. After meeting with a client, and doing a little research on their product, we stumbled upon this brilliant blog post that couldn’t say it any better.

“It’s amazing how big of a difference having really nice pictures of your space can make. A few months ago I ran an informal experiment (as research for another project) where I listed my apartment for rent on craigslist. They were both the same price, in the same area. One listing had really nice pictures taken with a high quality dslr and wide angel lens and the other had badly lit pictures taken with my iPhone. The listing with the nice pictures got 10x the emails.”   – Jon Wheatley of Need/Want

Maybe it’s obvious, but maybe not. In today’s digital age everyone has a camera in their pocket, and iPhone 7s are promoted as so good they can be used for magazine covers and advertising (We won’t name names). We are bombarded with mediocre images… like this production still that I took versus Craig Wagner’s beautiful image masterfully finished by digital artist Michelle Smith. See the difference?

Regardless of the project or scope, Studio 3, Inc. works with our clients, building relationships and crafting the perfect image for their brand. If you have yet to work with us, what are you waiting for? Drop us a line, let’s put our heads together to create something beautiful.

When it Comes to Video, Studio 3 Is Your Wingman

Director David King adjusting the video camera on set of the Leatherman Wingman video shoot
We had a great time hosting one of our long-time Clients in the Studio for a video shoot last week. Coordinated by Project Manager Liz Swales, the production featured some of the Client’s best-selling products in action and showcased their versatility. Director David King revved into action to create an expert blend of fun and professionalism on set. Assistant Trevor Boone supported the shoot with some behind-the-scenes production stills, prepping, propping, equipment support, and offering a hand with an unruly ball of twine. Putting product photography in motion with a demo video for your brand is a great way to enrich your customer’s experience and drive sales. Studio 3 is the perfect wingman to have when you’re ready for that product video.

What Can Video Do For Your Brand?

With the way the Internet is changing, and the evolving interests of the audience, video is something no brand can afford to ignore. It’s a far more powerful medium than just words alone, and provides many benefits to brands wanting to incorporate it. Here’s what video can do for you:

Interactivity: Video can make a brand or company more interactive to its viewers, and provide an extra enticement for people to learn more.

Entertaining: Done right, video can entertain your viewers and provide a fun glimpse into the brand and infuse it with personality.

Memorable: Video is far more memorable than an explanation or a banner ad. Videos tend to be remembered more easily, recalled more quickly, and shared more frequently.

Educate: It’s easy to retain information or learn something new when watching a video. When it comes to training or education, video is the way to go.

Emotional Connection: Video is one of the quickest ways to forge an emotional connection with the viewer. Using different techniques, a video can elicit a variety of emotional responses that encourage the viewer to feel a certain way.

Action: Video can spur a customer to take an action or make a decision. When you want to drive sales or get viewers to become customers, video can convince and convert.
Using video can create an integrated branded experience for your content strategy. Don’t let the chance pass you by, create an immersive experience with your customers. Call Studio 3 to get a quote for a custom video today.

Video – Eastside Distilling Holiday Gift Box

We were given a jingle by Eastside Distilling to get into the holiday spirit a little early with some videos promoting their new Holiday Gift Pack of themed liqueurs (yum!).
Our videos for their Potato Vodka and Marionberry Whiskey had impressed Eastside with their quality and had them coming back to Studio 3 for their holiday promotional needs (click on the links above to check those videos out!). Eastside had been using the videos on social media online, and found them to do well and create that coveted buzz – so more online videos were in short order.
Director David King crafted 4 videos promoting the Holiday Gift Pack and special recipes for each of the themed liqueurs: Egg Nog “Advocaat,” Peppermint Bark, and Holiday Spiced Liqueur.
For the main 30-second promotional video the Team approached the brief by creating a vintage Mad Men-style office holiday party, with set dec, lighting, and tone to the piece all 60’s-themed.
We then created festive recipe-specific videos for each liqueur:

The Hawthorne Flip

Dry shake, add ice, and shake again, strain and serve in a flute with peppermint chocolate drizzle and red chili flakes or a mint leaf.

The Mint-ini

In a mixing glass, add all ingredients over ice and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with cocoa powder.

The Snow Bunny

Mix brown sugar and a small amount of hot water in a heated glass to dissolve sugar. Add Holiday Spice Liqueur, cream, and fill with hot water. Stir, and top with whipped cream, sprinkle with nutmeg.

At the end of the shoot day, we decided to put together an extra short video: “Bad Santa,” which is what might happen at the end of the night once Santa has finished his holiday duty.

Check out Eastside Distilling on Facebook and Twitter for updates, recipes, and delicious spirits to get you into that Holiday spirit.

Video – October 1 Second Every Day

“There are so many tiny, beautiful, funny, tragic moments in your life — how are you going to remember them all?”
On the heels of our 30-second videos for July and September and we’ve created another video full of tiny, beautiful, funny moments behind the scenes with the Studio 3 Team.
From creating some buzz with a chainsaw video to mulling over a Fall cider setup and wrangling some adorable puppies for a studio photoshoot, “hard at work” can still include a lot of fun. But we’ve also taken a break with trips to Astoria, OR, visiting the Belmont Goats, attending Design Week Portland events, playing with a model train set, and splashing in some puddles. See if you can spot cameos by the Studio 3 Team, including Lead Digital Artist Alex Gumina, Photographers Henry Ngan, Craig Wagner, and Chris Eltrich , Video Director David King, and Social Media Manager Carly Cais.
Stitching all these different elements together for a Studio 3 behind-the-scenes video is just another day’s work for Director David King. When he isn’t laughing at the ridiculousness of his coworkers to create this 30-second snapshot of our month, he shoots and edits client videos for Studio 3. David specializes in branded product demonstration videos, corporate videos, holiday videos, informational videos, testimonial videos, and commercials. He and the Team work to solve each client’s creative problem, tailoring the experience to meet brand and audience needs. In each case we exceed client expectations, leading to repeat clients, some of whom have been returning to us for over 20 years! The Studio 3 experience is professional, all-inclusive, efficient, and fun from start to finish. Plus the client receives a targeted video product that achieves their goals of informing, educating, entertaining, and converting their viewers to customers.

Ready to get your brand on video and reach your ideal customer base? Reach out to the Studio 3 Team for a tailored video that showcases your company and product. Whether 5 minutes or 30 seconds every day, the video for you is sure to be memorable.

Video – September 1 Second Every Day

“There are so many tiny, beautiful, funny, tragic moments in your life — how are you going to remember them all?”
We’ve begun a new tradition of having the Studio 3 Team record videos of tiny, beautiful, funny, tragic, and amazing 1-second moments in their lives. For our newest piece, we’ve edited another 30-second video short from September that encapsulates what we’re all about.
Studio 3 is an awesome place to work, made up of a band of cool, creative talent. We also offer videography services to discerning clients who need the very best for their commercial shoots – and it’s our video Director David King who creates all of our videos.
The above video was just for fun, but Director David King and our Team regularly produce professional videos that effectively tell the brand story and exceed client expectations. Our process begins when a client reaches out to Studio 3 with a creative conundrum. We get into the client’s head and solve their problem utilizing our technical filmmaking skills to create a compelling visual story. Check out some of the videos we have produced for past clients here.
Each clip in the video is a snapshot, a moment from the past month, compiled by Mr. King into this upbeat vignette. In reality, these 30 seconds = “a month in the life” of Studio 3. Get a glimpse into what it’s like to hang out with us for a month (in one-second intervals):

If you’re interested in showcasing your best 1-second moments, the 1 Second Everyday app is available from the App Store. See our earlier 1 Second Everyday video from July here – and get in touch for an experience you won’t easily forget.
