New Assistant Photographer! Welcome Jonny!

We wanted to welcome our new Assistant Photographer to our Portland Studio! A few words from Jonny!

Assistant Photographer

My interest in photography was born on four wheels. I received my first skateboard when I was 12 years old and haven’t been able to get off one since. I grew up in rural Wisconsin, which is not the most optimal place to learn how to ride a skateboard. But that didn’t stop me from sacrificing my elbows and knees to the concrete gods. As I quickly obsessed about all things skateboarding, so did my passion for documenting it. I watched every skate video I could, studying angles and dreaming of my first fish-eye lens. It was at this moment when I began to think about camera angles everywhere I went (that was skateable). I started out with disposable Kodak cameras. I photographed my friends at the local skatepark and inevitably moved over to video (Hi-8 and VHS-C). I spent almost all of my time skating, filming, and working at the local pizza shop. I spent the first year of college ‘undeclared’ until I came to my senses and joined the film production program. My junior year I landed a summer internship in Portland. After I graduated I packed up and made the journey westward.
My goal was clear: get into the camera department at all costs. After a couple of years freelancing in reality TV land as an assistant and as a local videographer shooting weddings and smaller jobs, I felt dissatisfied with the progression of my camera and lighting skills (reality TV doesn’t necessarily lend itself to creativity). So I took a chance and tried photo assisting. I instantly fell in love with photography and the amount of precision and tinkering to get that perfect shot. A half a year later I was a busy freelancer frequently working for Studio 3 when an opportunity arose and I swiftly jumped on it.

Commercial Product Photographer Craig Wagner Live Hard Work Hard!

We all agree around Studio 3 that Craig Wagner is one of the hardest working photographers around.  And his lighting skills are truly amazing!  What he can do with an ordinary pile of broken concrete and a pair of work boots rocks! A few thoughts from Commercial Product Photographer Craig Wagner!

This was truly a smoke and mirrors shot. I returned from a location shoot to a pile of rubble sitting in the studio. This was left over from a previous project. How could I let this opportunity pass? I pulled a few tools from my garage for props, contrasted the rough concrete texture with smoke, and asked my producer to locate a pair of boots. Nothing like a bit of inspiration after a shoot day!
I found myself in a rock and a hard place on this project due to working alone, which I may add, I do prefer sometimes during photo testing. It can greatly help with the creative juices. Normally, as a team we get extremely involved in the concepting process, but this project was extremely spontaneous. So it was completely up to me!

I had to operate the Hasselblad and the Roscoe Smoke Machine at the same time. What to do? I recently downloaded Phocus App for my Iphone 5 that enabled me to trigger the camera and operate the smoke machine while being away from the eye of the camera. I am not trying to do a big recommendation for this App, but its pretty cool. It allows me to completely control the camera functions with not being tied to the camera or the computer and it even gives me a preview mode so I’m not running back and forth to the computer screen. This is a really great tool for our Commercial Photography clients and one of the great things about working at Studio 3 is we are always up to date on the latest technology!

Studio 3 Films Director David King WSU Vancouver!

We are so very excited to partner with Washington State University in Vancouver to highlight their beautiful NW campus. We shot the campus over three days to capture student interaction, campus activity and the amazing NW environment. For insight into this video project read below to hear from our Studio 3 Films Director, David King!

When approached by Washington State University to produce a recruiting video for their Vancouver, WA campus, the questions we asked ourselves were, “what makes this campus unique?” and “how can we use that to help tell the story of Washington State University Vancouver?” All it took was a visit to the beautiful campus to answer both of those questions. The setting, with views of Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens, along with the diverse student body tells the story of a small, local campus with all of the amenities of a major University.
We shot the footage over three consecutive days.  One day before the students returned for the fall term in order to get some beauty shots of the buildings and surroundings. Then a week later when the students returned to school to get the feel of student life. One more day to shoot a couple of time-lapse sequences and it was time to edit.
We thought at first that a voiceover accompanying the video, explaining the virtues of the WSUV campus would be the way to go, but soon realized that the imagery itself said plenty about what it was like to attend school here.  The administration came to us with a desire to show how a local campus could give a prospective student the large university experience and we were able to accomplish that by just letting the campus speak for itself.

Studio 3 Supports WIC!

We decided it was time to help out one of our favorite government agencies, WIC!
WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC is a nationwide program for low-income families that teaches health and nutrition skills through classes and supplemental healthy foods. In 2011, the Oregon WIC Program provided support to 177,827 women, infants, and children.
We did some in-studio product shots and some adorable baby shots too – enjoy!

Behind the Scenes at Sugar Wheel Works!

You know it’s going to be a great shoot when your client greets you at the door with fresh brewed coffee and a big plate of donuts. Jude Kirstein, owner of Sugar Wheel Works, is a staple in the growing cycling scene here. Jude masterfully creates hand-built bicycle wheels in her ultra hip shop located in Northeast Portland. We had tons of fun and can’t wait to show you the final video edit. In the meantime, check out these behind the scenes stills from the shoot!

Studio 3 Takes On Baby Day at NW Harvest!

The Seattle team decided to get our volunteer on by visiting one of our favorite local charities, NW Harvest. Right after breakfast at the delicious Portage Bay Cafe, we dropped into the Cherry Street food bank for baby day. We had a blast passing out diapers, formula, and meeting all the deserving families.
This incredible staff dedicates their days to making sure the Seattle area is fed, turning no one away. The admirable can-do attitude inspired us all. We can’t wait to go back! Check out some hilarious pics of us in action below:
