Throwback To The Future!

“Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads!”

We’re taking a flight back in time with Fluke Manufacturing! This week we’re busting out the film strips and having a flashback to the days of pre-digital shooting. Our Lead Shooter Henry Ngan captures the era in this classic Fighter Pilot Tech shot on film! Henry and the rest of the Studio 3 crew had a blast working with Art Director Val Kurita, who now Product Manages Chaudiere Design, Inc. in Seattle, WA.  And with retired successful Graphic Designer Gary LaComa who is currently creating Fine Art Photography , you can check out his gallery at Saatchi Art and shop on Zentopia to snag some of his beautiful art work. Gary hops in the time machine to share a few words with us about his tenure with Studio 3…

“This image was a core brand image for a new product introduction for Fluke Manufacturing. It was designed to be the visual icon for this new product in advertising, print collateral, and point of sale posters. The overriding concept of the product was “speed” which lead to a vision loosely visualized in my head and sold to the client. The client’s trust in us to deliver the goods was the primary reason we got this project. It was a very important introduction that the company had invested in heavily. The stakes were high.

…It was always exciting working with The Boys and getting the results we did on this and many other projects. This campaign, built visually around this image, was a huge success for the client.

I would like to add however that I chose to work with Studio 3 on many of my clients projects over a decade of effort for 3 primary reasons. First their technical expertise. Henry and his support crew were, and always has been, technically way ahead of their time (even back then). This image was actually created in the camera and on film, unlike today where a computer screen and digital manipulation reign supreme. Second reason was their attitude about working as a team. Unlike many photographers, they allowed me to work with them in the trenches. We worked together hands on… as a team. Many photographers are less than enthusiastic about this collaborative style of work and prefer that you sit in a chair and yes/no “their” creations. Third my confidence in them to deliver. I knew they/we would deliver the product we sold and to do it efficiently and within my client’s budget and schedule. “

It’s always fun sharing these stories from way back in the day!

Once upon a time..

Posted on March 18, 2014

Once upon a time, believe it or not; everything wasn’t touch screen – actually there were no computer screens. There were keyboards that physically printed what you typed, ink involved in every word, and a bit of old class before the smooth cutting edge of technology took over the world. Introducing the vintage typewriter! In watching the recent Oscars Award Show, we were taken away by one of the sets background that was decorated with over 100 vintage typewriters. It was so simple, fitting, and brilliant. Placed behind presenting and award winning celebrities, it stood as a star on its own. The Typewriter Talk Blog shares with us a few snapshots of Robert DeNiro and Penelope Cruz presenting an award with the typewriter set decorating the stage behind them.

Luckily, Liz, our Producing Whiz, rambled through her box of vintage goodies and found her chic turquoise vintage Smith Corona Typewriter that had collected dust and needed it’s time to shine again. So we snatched that beauty and put it in the spotlight.

Here’s how to score your very own vintage typewriter! Have a little fun with it, use it as a beautiful backdrop like the Oscar’s, set up a clever photo shoot, or make sweet sweet music like Martin Breinschmid!

It’s About That Time..

We’re springing forward with new technology! Studio 3 is keeping up with the recent time change with the new Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch! Inspired by losing an hour this past weekend, we thought we would focus on the hottest watch around. According to the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, wearable devices are catapulting into todays market! This snazzy timepiece is compatible with the Galaxy Note 3 and other Galaxy smartphones. You can place and answer calls directly from your wrist, how crazy is that!? With this clean accessory, you get style and substance. Pairing with that, we had Senior Shooter David Bell work his magic with lighting to enhance the clean smooth timepiece of the future. Once the smartwatch presented itself as inspiration, we had David Bell run with it:

“Hip and happening are always connected, you gotta love technology! Very cool Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch that keeps you connected all day. The shot is inspired by the fact that it works where you are. Clean and simple, like the watch.”

Excited about the new wearable technology addition to our wardrobe, Studio 3 did some research on what this sexy little device can offer. Check out this commercial showing the ‘Evolution’ of the dreamed about futuristic watch that became real…

Panty Pressing Fun!!

Posted on February 14, 2014

In celebration of the world’s naughty, but nice holiday, food photographer David Bell got inspired. He created a photograph with a mix of pie, panties, and fun. It was fun for the studio to get involved in a strange photograph that incorporated food and naughty bits. Read on for the photographer’s words on this crazy shoot…

Sexy Panties – Check
Berry Pie – Check
Her two favorites ~ Ooooo this will be a Good Valentine ! ! !

Creative Direction – Shoot a fun interesting eye catching image of hands at work. Shoot it the way I shoot food, my pretty lighting and shallow focus

Art Direction – Push it…push it more !

Fun times making fun images . . yes it is a good day

-David Bell

This shoot of course was not complete without our trusty producer Megan. She was nothing short but in the Valentine’s Day spirit and making this image one of a kind.

When the idea of a juxtaposed panty/baking image was initially thrown around, we all thought it was quite naughty and figured we should give it a whirl!
As the producer, I was charged with the task of prop shopping and finding the hero of the image…the perfect pair of panties. I hit Nordstrom and Victoria’s Secret HARD.
I had about A LOT of options, ranging from a perky, floral magenta to a black satin number.
Our first pick was a multi-colored, tie-dyed pair that, to me, represented a mixed berry concoction. That was looking pretty groovy, but ultimately a vibrant purple pair caught our eye and ended up being just right!
Chris Eltrich, our fab hand model, says that “It was a dream come true” to be that close to a pair of women’s underwear. Just kidding. But really.

-Megan Nolan

As you can see, we absolutely love this fun image!! And from everyone at Studio 3, Happy Valentine’s Day, and we hope you have a fantastic day with your sweetie, your friends, or your cat. Whatever, makes you feel the love!!!

The Sweet Change Of Seasons!!

Posted on February 4, 2014

darkwood4 — Studio 3, Inc.

In the change of seasons, we at Studio 3 like to capture the highlights of what each period has to offer. Here, we’ve highlighted the rustic winter feel with its bright beautiful contributions. Senior Shooter David Bell goes in depth about his inspiration behind the shoot:

“This is one of a series of 4 shots. The harvest season was coming to an end, winter was starting to set in. I wanted to show the beauty and pretty color of the season. The dark wood and lighting with longer shadows is indicative of winter. The sun is low and we have shortened days with more darkness. Within this is the pop of colors of the season. I am always so happy to see the Satsumas return to the market. They are so bright, sweet and refreshing. The bright green leaves contrasting against the bright orange is always a treat. The rich red color of local Tart Cranberries along with sweet earthy brown Chestnuts make for delicious feast to the taste and eyes.

Pretty dappled lighting created in studio with strobe light captured with a Hasselblad camera with a longer lens to compress the elements. Bringing all of this together.”

– David Bell

Below, are the rest of the series. These gorgeous shots embody everything David spoke of. What a great way to bring bold and beautiful color to a dark and cold season. The pop of color helps us prepare for what the upcoming seasons will bring! While we wait for the sunshine, it’s warmth, gardens of colorful flowers and bold greenery to make it’s comeback; we can thank David for reminding us to skip the hot chocolate and slices of pie every once in a while, and enjoy the sweet delicacies that nature has to offer during the winter season.

The Colorway Explained

Posted on January 28, 2014

Our digital art department is well-versed in colorways. In recent months, we have completed up to over 1,000 colorways, and that’s just for one client! These colorways, are always accurate due to our in house proofing system, as well as our department’s expertise on matching color. Since this has become an essential need for our current clients, we thought we would share with you exactly how we go about changing color for catalogs, packaging, etc. Digital lead Alex Gumina gives you the dish on how he approaches these specific jobs.

When I approach any digital project I always ask myself three questions. “What needs to be done?”, “How much time are we working with?” and “What is the most efficient way to get from A to B?”. Once the first two questions are answered, I move on to developing my approach. Like most things, when it comes to something like changing the color of a product there are many ways to go about it. This particular shoe project was massive (reference below image), so we needed something that would get the job done, and also be interchangeable between our team of Digital Artists.  With these things in mind we developed a two layer per color method. What this means is that for each color that needed to be changed, we used two layers in our photoshop document to adjust that color. If there were five colors that meant ten layers.

Once we got the color down, we were able to go back in and adjust things per the client. If we needed more highlights or more shadows we were able to go back in and add those on without disturbing the quality of the color. Or, if the color was slightly off, we were able to shift it into place with minimal effort. It was almost like a digital assembly line for touch up and color work. Given the scope of the project and our air tight deadline this was extremely invaluable.

Portfolio Perfection!

Posted on January 21, 2014

At Studio 3, we are constantly improving our portfolio by being inspired by photography trends, current advertising campaigns, as well as feedback from local portfolio shows. This particular shoot was meant for photographer Craig Wagner. We had been constantly receiving client needs that included drinks, food, incorporated in a lifestyle environment. We decided to meet this need, by heading to a Portland hotspot, Produce Row. Below you can read Liz Swales, the Portland producer’s take on the shoot…

The Seattle marketing team came to me with the request of adding some beautiful, natural, and simple lifestyle, drink shots to Craig Wagner’s portfolio.

The first thing that came to my mind was Produce Row, a place that I used to manage and call home. The bar, lighting, classic nature and overall feel of the well known restaurant and bar in Portland, Oregon made it a dream to shoot in.

We were able to use what Produce Row has to offer, lots of whiskey, fancy mixology, and a bar with 25 taps. It was the perfect set up. With the addition of Craig’s beautiful lighting and creativity, we were able to create classy images that met the request.

I set up the shoot among two days, knowing from previous experience that there are only about 3 hours in the day the restaurant is slow. I didn’t want our shoot to affect or be effected by their overall patrons.

This made our team work well and get our creative ideas working in a timely fashion.

It was a great experience combining efforts with our team and my old team at Produce Row, while capturing the beauty and knowledge of drink mixing.

-Liz Swales

And of course, this story wouldn’t be complete without Craig Wagner’s insight on how he was able to capture such beautiful images.

The sequence of the bartender making a drink are amongst my favorite, I created a bit of energy by dragging the shutter to allow movement, the soft natural light was a bonus.

With mixology being all of the rage these days, I thought it be nice to expand my portfolio with some environmental shots, my producer sent our scout to a few locations including Produce Row, which was remodeled in 2010, the space, environment and lighting made it the perfect choice for this particular project.

Shooting on location can be challenging, light conditions can change rapidly, space can be tight and you may need to shoot during business
hours. We chose to break the shoot into two afternoon sessions to lower our impact on their patrons.

A large bank of north facing windows provided beautiful natural light. Only using a flexfill and a kicker light in addition allowed us to move
around the venue quickly.

-Craig Wagner

Teamwork Makes The Dream Work

Posted on January 7, 2014

Starting the New Year, Studio 3 reflects on our performance and progress. Always wanting to provide classic work while staying fresh and up to par with current trends, it is helpful to hear great feedback from happy clients to let us know we’re on track.

We have had the pleasure of doing photography illustrations for Marquis Corporation for over 20 years, which naturally progressed into providing video illustrations to show just how great their spas are. You can’t watch these videos without wanting to get into one yourself, we guarantee it!

It was an exciting and challenging project that Studio 3 was ready for. Our team shot over 20 videos in 5 months, 2 television spots, we set up 5 different spas in our studio at once, with our Video Director David King pulling 14 hour days for 23 days straight in post production. It was a busy time but we enjoyed every minute of it with Marquis Corporation on set with us everyday.

When completing a large project like this, we like to pat ourselves on the back and show our appreciation for the team that comes together to make it happen. But when we hear positive feedback from a client that is happy with our work and the affect it has, it excites us even more. It reminds us of our capabilities and the great people we are lucky to work with everyday. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Thanks to a simple yet powerful message from Jim Johnston, it has Studio 3 fired up and ready to take on the New Year. Bring it on 2014!

Drinks on Seattle Magazine!

Posted on December 3, 2013

Seattle Magazine recently approached Chris Eltrich, to do a drink photography shoot. Seattle Magazine’s goal was to showcase the best watering holes in Seattle. In order to truly capture the spirit of each Seattle destination, they gave Studio 3 the task of capturing each bar’s signature cocktail’s unique look and recipe. Luckily, we had help from a mixologist, from each bar. The mixologists whipped up the drinks, and we couldn’t be happier with their styling skills.

On set, we enjoyed hanging out with all of the talented mixologists and testing all of the different cocktails. Our favorite beverage included the salad drink, it made us all feel quite “healthy”. It’s multipurpose nature, won us all over. However, with that said there wasn’t a cocktail that didn’t agree with at least one of us! We can’t wait to visit these spots as a team and try all of their fun drinks!

Besides the team having a blast on set, Seattle magazine was quite impressed with the results, running one of the images as the cover. Stephanie Mennella, from Seattle Magazine, shared a few words with us on the feedback received regarding the images:

It looks AMAZING!! It’s getting tons of compliments, and I appreciate the extra mile you guys went to accommodate the hectic schedule of getting all the drinks shot.

With such awesome words, we couldn’t help but feel great. It’s always a blast working with Seattle Magazine, especially when spirits are involved. We look forward to our next shoot with them and hope perhaps it involves Seattle’s best restaurants…

On that note, we expect the months ahead to be full of fun drink photography shoots and hope to get a call to work with you on your next drink project!

Time Lapse: Forest for the Trees Northwest

Posted on September 24, 2013

About two months ago, we were approached by Portland artist Gage Hamilton, the organizer of a public mural art project “Forest for the Trees Northwest“, as a possible site for one of 10 new murals that would be going up the week of August 19th. The south wall of Studio 3 was of particular interest due to it’s size, accessibility and well, it looked like it could use some artistic love. Just standing in the parking lot looking at the vast orange canvas that would be transformed into an original piece of art, we wanted to find a way to document the process. All we were told was that the artists would be painting for 5 days, that the outcome would be a surprise and that the result would be epic and spectacular.

Time Lapse Art Wall! — Studio 3, Inc.

After much internal discussion around documenting this creativity, we decided the best way to document the week of painting was going to be the creation of a time lapse video. We set up a GoPro Hero 3 on the roof of our neighbor, the Jolly Roger Bar and Grill and recorded from dawn til dusk for 5 days. The GoPro also took an exposure every 30 seconds. Through our friends at Star Rentals, we were able to provide the two scissor lifts to the artists to assist with the project.

Hawaiian artist, Kamea Hadar (@kameahadar), and Australian artist David “Meggs” Hooke (@houseofmeggs), worked throughout the week and gave us an amazing addition to the studio and the Hawthorne neighborhood.

Check out the resulting time lapse video and the amazing art that the guys created. Better yet, drop by the studio and check it out in person. ~ David King / Director / Studio 3 Films
