1 Second Everyday

“There are so many tiny, beautiful, funny, tragic moments in your life — how are you going to remember them all?”

Imagine a movie that includes everyday for the rest of your life…  That’s the motto of the  1 Second Everyday app. As of this May, director, producer, video maker, animator, and app creator Cesar Kuriyama has been recording one second of his life everyday for three years. Kuriyama started creating this video diary on his 30th Birthday and claims that if he lives to see 80, family and friends will have a 5-hour-long accurate depiction of his life. The “1 Second Everyday” app does exactly what the name implies. It allows users to create a video diary of their lives by providing them with platform to record, edit, and store one unique moment a day for a year at a time in order to create an irreplaceable memoir. Kuriyama said that his driving force for this project was the fact that he would gain the ability to flashback through his memories and re-evaluate how he approached each day.

In spirit of this moving idea, David King, our director of video production compiled a 30 second video of what one month with the Studio 3 team looks like… and we’ve all come to realize how lucky we really are! Here’s a 30 second glance at our random, crazy, and beautiful lives:

So, if you’re feeling stressed, excited, discouraged, confused, wired, or tired, go ahead and start your very own video. You might be surprised with the outcome. Stop, Drop, & Knoll

Coined in 1987 by Andrew Kromelow, Knolling is the process of arranging like objects in parallel or 90 degree angles as a method of organization.

Kromelow worked as the janitor for Frank Gehry’s furniture fabrication shop, which at the time was designing for Knoll, Inc. Knoll is known for its angular and modern designs and has over 30 pieces recognized and displayed in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Each night when Kromelow would go to clean-up, he would arrange Gehry’s tools in the form of 90 degree angles for order, visibility, and optimal use. Kromelow called this process “Knolling.”

Years later when contemporary artist, Tom Sachs began working at the fabrication shop he adopted Kromelow’s style of organization as a form of art. He became so inspired by it that he came up with his own personal matra of “Always be Knolling.” This was modeled after Gehry’s famous in-house saying of “Always be closing.”

When Sach’s art became public, the Knolling craze took-off.

And so, to keep Sach’s mantra alive, studio photographer, Chris Eltrich teamed up with commercial stylist, Tristan Weholt to map out and capture Studio 3’s take on camping just in time for the 4th of July.

We know what you’re thinking, “how could you forget the beer and hot dogs!?” Every 4th of July, Americans consume 155 million hot dogs; Many of which are probably roasted over an open fire and enjoyed next to a lakeside view. With that said, need the perfect place to pitch a tent? We have a few suggestions. But regardless of what you do or where you are this 4th of July, don’t forget how lucky you are to be an American. Even if that means shot-gunning as many patriotic brews as you can. Cheers and Knoll on!

#TBT: NIKE, “We Have Liftoff.”

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s….a….Nike Columbia? Reintroducing Nike’s soaring style named after it’s twin, NASAs Space Shuttle Columbia. This ground breaking style, very much like the Columbia Space Shuttle, is meant to endure long (st)rides. In an effort to blast this amazing new running shoe into the world of athleticism and fashion, Nike made sure to run it through several laboratory tests. According to the article below, after more than 800 miles, the shoe proved to show no loss of cushioning and minimal wear on the anatomical outsole. To launch this shoe the right way, David Kennedy, of Wieden & Kennedy, asked our team at Studio 3 to hop on board for this project. We then worked together, and knocked this Nike ad out of this world.

When Studio 3 Lead Photographer, Craig Wagner, was asked to shoot this product – he was excited to the moon and back. Keep in mind, this ad was done in the early ’80s during the pre-digital days.

“We worked with Wieden & Kennedy quite a bit when they first started out. It was great to collaborate again on this project and compile an image together before the era of digital technology. Wieden & Kennedy provided the idea and the stock image of NASAs Columbia Space Shuttle. I shot this on a Sinar 4×5. This was actually my first time taking an image and lighting the product to match.”

Taking a flight back in time with this ad shows that our capabilities and imagination are beyond the world of digital art and computer technology. BlackRapid is honored to be hosting folk musician and Rock ‘n’ Roll photographer, Henry Diltz. Henry will be presenting his famous images and personal stories of life in Laurel Canyon during the 1960s and 1970s. Henry has the unique ability to capture candid shots that convey a rare feeling of trust and intimacy. He spent many afternoons with The Doors, Crosby, Stills. Nash & Young, Jackson Browne, Eagles, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees and many more. Henry has shot over 300 album covers. This is a great opportunity to hear first hand how these iconic images were captured.

A routine can get tiring after a while.  When something works, we like to run with it. Why ruin a good thing, right? Wrong. Oddly enough, change can help you cope with these feelings of never-ending monotony. In the midst of our daily hustle and bustle it’s hard to find time for a little variety.

Well, no need to quit your job or buy a new car. Studies show that little changes in life like changing your morning route to work and cooking up a new recipe for dinner is all you really need to reignite your passion for life. All of us at Studio 3 believe in the power of music. Not a day goes by without one genre or another floating through the air. One big reason our shoots are so successful is the inspiration we get from tunes that both lift us up and remind us how much we love what we do. Our unbridled passion for melodies, beats, and jamming out led our lead-photographer and master-lighter, Craig Wagner, to capture the beauty of music in one of its many forms. This monochromatic image was produced by placing glasses before a lens in order to create a distorted look.

We realize times can get tough, so start here and remember that you are the architect of your own destiny. Nothing is eternal, but if you are truly unhappy with something, change it. Until then, crank up your Jambox and start picking up some good vibrations!

We’re hopping on the bandwagon and throwing in all the fresh produce this season has to offer us.

Hearing the constant hype of the newest health craze, we could not wait to take part in it. Who better to capture the spirit of our new found lifestyle, than Lead Shooter Craig Wagner! Thanks to Craig for beautifully highlighting the latest addition to our kitchen and for making veggies and fruit look oh-so-juicing-good! Want to join in on the fun? Try one of our favorite refreshing juice recipes that will get you into a lean, mean, summer heat fighting machine!

1/2 cucumber 
1/4 a small Honeydew melon
Small bunch of seedless white grapes
2 kiwi fruits (without skin)
Large handful of spinach
Small sprig of mint
1 lemon

Cut a cucumber in half. Cut the honeydew, and remove the rind as it’s not good for juicers. Juice the cucumber, honeydew, grapes, kiwi, spinach, lemon and mint. Drink immediately.

#TBT: Old School Legends, New School Talent!

In the honor of the Portland Trailblazers’ new–school talent like Damian Lillard, LaMarcus Aldridge, Wesley Matthews and team fighting their way into the NBA playoffs this year, we thought it would be fitting to showcase a shoot we did of a couple of Rip City legends! Clyde Drexler and Sam Bowie are not just your average NBA players (which is a huge accomplishment in itself.) No, these two changed the game.

Effortlessly earning the legend title, Clyde Drexler was not only a trailblazing star; he’s a Gold Medalist and key player in the 1992 US Olympic Dream Team, and also happens to don one of those shiny NBA Championship rings. Drexler laid the foundation down in Rip City for incoming stars like Sam Bowie, who was second pick in the 1984 draft. Bowie showed up and showed out during his first year, earning him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Team. You can only imagine how ecstatic Studio 3 was to receive the opportunity and honor to capture these stars in their prime.

At Studio 3, we honor icons of our own – the ones behind the camera. Studio 3 legend, Craig Wagner, had the amazing opportunity to work with Drexler and Bowie. Sharing the responsibility as they do to lead the way, many have come after Craig and learned much of what our All Star has to offer. Studio 3 is lucky to have it’s own Dream Team consisting of its founders and original shooters, Jim Felt and Henry Ngan. To our lead shooters that have played for our team for almost 30 seasons now, Craig Wagner and David Bell. Not to mention our up and coming rookie squad with explosive talent, Chris Eltrich, Jonny Brandt, and Erik Knudsen. A team can’t be complete without it’s bench and it’s cheerleaders, which is the role that the rest of this squad proudly inherits! Studio 3 is the NW All Star Team of Photography, and we look forward to those Championship opportunities, one shot at a time.

Everyone has their own prediction of what the future has in store for our world. Some say flying cars and others say crashing computers… For Studio 3’s Digital Artists, it’s bionic sheep.

This freaky farm friend was brought to life by our deft digital dudes who were approached by Frank Creative to make their furry vision a reality. Lead Digital Artist, Alex Gumina, who worked on this project states that “…in a way, putting together this digital art piece was like making a collage. We sourced different mechanical pieces and worked to make them blend well together.”

SheepProcess  — Studio 3, Inc.

Here at Studio 3 we do a lot more than take and make top-notch pictures. We envision. We create. And we deliver.

To Alex, the essential main objective of the production was “try to make a sheep look like a badass.” The project began with an average farm dweller much like this one. But after a series of trial and error, what once began as a timid, hornless sheep later turned into a fearless, powerful, ram.

The future is all about being innovative and original and we take that very seriously. We believe in being pioneers for visual solutions and producing the most unique and inventive images that are fit to “WOW” any crowd. We love creativity and we support the future and as a result, there isn’t a project too crazy or insane for us, because after all, the best inventions began as wild dreams.

Very few things are redder than Anne Hathaway at the 2014 Met Gala. Okay, okay… we know what you’re thinking, but let’s keep Taylor Swift out of this. Y’see, here at Studio 3, we like to keep our trend radar always on alert. We don’t just imitate what we see: we think it, we feel it, we breathe it, and we take it to the next level just like our Digital Don, Carl Beery did with his flashy tattoo. That’s why we weren’t going to stand to be challenged by any strutting star on the run-way. While there were many red hot looks this spring, Studio 3 DEFINITELY “wore it best” this season with our rouge rotary ringer, captured by one of OUR personal stars, Photographer Chris Eltrich. Take THAT Fantine. RedPhoneRedSurface 0698  — Studio 3, Inc. Chris made this image possible through the application of a solid red sheet of plexi glass and a vibrantly colored vintage phone. Besides being inspired by our timeless fashion finesse, Photographer Chris Eltrich explains that he wanted to shoot this because “the phone is very ‘in YO’ face.’ When you look at it all you can think is ‘Pick it up! You pick up that phone!'” We believe that a response that good isn’t generated from just any old red thing “reigning” the runway. With that said, I think it’s safe to assume that there’s absolutely NOTHING that Studio 3 can’t handle. You have a crazy project for us? Bring it on. We’re more than confident that we can produce A1 results, because nothing makes us happier than “wow-ing” you.
