Chatting with Studio 3 Co-Founder, Jim Felt

Studio 3 has was established in 1978 by three high school buddies. We sat down with one of the founding members, Jim Felt, to learn a little more about his lengthy career in photography.
How long have you been a photographer?
I got my first camera in 8th grade but it didn’t occur to me then I would become a photographer and remain a photographer.

What was the biggest “uh oh” moment you can recall having on a set?
We forgot our light meter for a shoot in Oklahoma City. The shoot was during a sunset and we needed that light meter. We called every shop in town and of course nobody had anything for us to use. So I went ahead took the photo without a light meter and it turned out perfect anyway. The client never knew.

What was the most innovative “MacGyver moment” you’ve had on set?
I was at the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama getting ready to shoot a space shuttle. The shuttle flew in on a 747 and we were there to do a mid-operation shoot. The problem was, how was I going to light this thing? I realized that this military base was full of firemen, so I walked up to them and asked them, “Hey, can we use your spotlights to light up this space shuttle?”  They agreed and we got the firemen to use the spotlights on their trucks to light up the shuttle.

What was the craziest thing you caught on camera that wasn’t for a shoot?
It was 1968 and rioting over the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr had begun in the Lloyd Center area of Portland. My buddy and I were cruising around and pulled up to the completely empty parking lot of the Lloyd Center Mall. Armed with our Nikons, we approached the mall and it looked abandoned, except for the cop cars that were parked inside of the mall. We proceeded to walk around taking photos of this creepy, empty mall when finally we hear a voice, “What the hell do you think you are doing here?” It was the police, with their guns. They were telling us to leave and even tried to take our film. We had cameras and they had tommy guns.

There have been some unbelievable moments that I’ve captured over the course of my photography career (some planned, some un-planned) and I wouldn’t trade my experience for any other profession in the world. It’s been exciting to watch Studio 3 grow through the “film-days”, into digital, and I can’t wait to see what happens next as we move into virtual/ augmented reality!

Lifestyle Photography – Darth Vader Ride

People in Darth Vader masks riding carousel ride at amusement park on location having funNo matter what we do, if it involves visual imagery, WE love it. We just do. Studio 3 excels at answering any brief, any client need with rockstar photo and video that delights and amuses. We guarantee that you’ll love it too.
Shot by Studio 3 co-founder Jim Felt, this lifestyle photography shoot aimed to capture the giddy fun of an amusement park at dusk, with a dose of complete silliness. Produced on-location at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland, OR, it was an project that posed a number of technical challenges. Jim strove to specifically showcase the motion and movement of the carousel ride in-camera, without relying on any digital techniques. The car carousel ride was scouted to play up the “Star Wars” theme and create “a warp drive-ish effect” with motion and lighting. Jim utilized his expertise in motion photography to pan with the people riding the carousel, simultaneously shooting on a low shutter speed with a strobe on a low setting to light his foreground subjects. In this way he was still able to retain the brightness of the carousel lights and the vivid colorization in the frame without losing anything to washing out. Jim notes, “I love the nuttiness that it represents – almost like early Star Wars before everything was digital!”
The image that resulted was not Photoshopped or retouched in any way; it was, in Jim’s words, “100% pure photography. WHY? Because it’s great FUN!” His love of photography and the fun of the craft is embodied in every photo he takes – as is every project done at Studio 3 by our experts. You’ll see our love of images shine when you drop us a line to produce yours.

Vehicle Photography that will Inspire an Adventure!

We’ll help you plan your next adventure and escape your current dilemma with Jim Felt’s newest addition to our vehicle photography portfolio. Read on to learn about his inspiration behind the shoot:

My absolute inspiration behind this shoot was the Red Cadillac. I saw it leaving a repair shop and knew I had to shoot it. I hunted down the owner and was lucky enough to bring the awesome ride into the studio. This allowed us to create not only my image but the other in addition some great vehicle photography for the studio’s portfolio.
When visualizing my shoot, I was stuck between creating a vintage, time correct piece versus a high roller who owns the car in the new millennium. I decided to go with a Vegas theme that looks as if it could have been shot last week. The thought was a showgirl on the run, hence the real gun and fur coat. I wanted to end with one Bad Ass picture. Originally in my thought process I was thinking red car, redhead…it just so happens I knew just the model and she was perfect for the theme.
In order to capture this image, I used a tall ladder with the camera mounted on top. I wanted the camera mounted on the ladder, so I could step down and direct the model from the shooting floor. I also chose to have a tight shot, so we would not have to enhance the background in digital. We added the yellow stripes in the studio and I lit it to have the vehicle reflect Las Vegas like lights. In order to create these reflections you could say I lit it with a bit of everything. Then wham bam, the image was captured.
I think my favorite thing about this image is how it leaves you questioning…Is she a gangster? Did she kill someone? Is she in trouble? What exactly is she running from? We may never know, but what we do know is we ended up with a great image that in the model’s terms is ‘cool & shit’.
